Good morning!

Today is Monday, May 18th, 2020. We hope you had a great weekend! What was your favorite thing you did this weekend? We will learn about community helpers this week. Can you think of different jobs we have in our community? Today we will focus on a police officer and firefighter. We are excited to learn new things about these very important jobs.

Math

Watch this silly video to review the math term, EQUAL! https://safeYouTube.net/w/KsKD Throughout the week, we will learn more about making a FAIR SHARE. We will practice taking a group of objects and dividing them into smaller groups, all with equal amounts.

New Concept of the week:

Part Part Whole (number 10)

Part part whole is the when you add two

parts to get the whole

Parents, ask your child to recall some ways they can make six. It helps for the child to say something along the lines of “5 and 5 make 10”

Let’s Practice:

Watch the video below to practice adding parts to make a whole.

Social Studies

This week we are learning all about community helpers! Community helpers are people who live and work in our communities. They do many different things to help us every day. They provide us with goods (products we use) and services (things they do for us)

  • A good is a product we use (for example- food, clothing, toys, furniture, and toothpaste).
  • A service is an action someone provides for us (for example- haircuts, dr appointments, mail delivery, car repairs, and teaching).

A police officer keeps our community safe and makes sure everyone is following the laws.

A fire fighter keeps our community safe by putting out fires and rescuing people. Watch this video to learn more!

Complete the worksheet below. Then tell an adult what each community helper does.

3 cups of Water

6 tablespoons Corn Syrup

Mix ingredients together and pour into a flat dish. Store extra solution in a mason jar.

You can also make your own bubble wand out of pipe cleaners or floral wire! Stretch out the material and make a loop at the end. Twist the end to secure the loop. Add beads to your wand for extra fun! A straw or cookie cutter can be fun to try in your bubble solution as well!

Let’s learn more about dividing groups of objects to make a FAIR SHARE! A fair share means that every person or group has an equal amount. Have you ever needed to share your toys at home with a sibling or a friend? Watch this short video and then have fun making a fair share below! https://safeYouTube.net/w/IQKD

Discuss this fair share problem and solve to divide into equal sets. Two children are playing with 8 Lego blocks. How can you divide the Lego blocks so that both children have an equal amount? Describe the fair share you made - There are 8 Legos. A fair share would be 4 Legos for each child!!

Let’s Practice:

Watch this video and review ways to make the number 9!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoOrRWYtv9c

We will use the number this week to continue learning parts of a whole. Use these domino pictures to show your child that 2 numbers (parts) can be added to make a whole. Yesterday you found objects around the house to make 9 in different ways. Using small objects like legos or beans, try grouping them in ways to make 10 like the domino examples on this slide. Say the parts of a number aloud. Example: 9 and 1, 5 and 5, 7 and 3, 1 and 9

Yesterday you practiced making a fair share with Lego blocks. Watch this video before trying today’s activity! https://safeYouTube.net/w/8RMD In the video, the birds shared crackers equally. Let’s explore sharing equal amounts with another fun treat.... candy!

You can use real candy, small objects or even paper circles. Start with 10 pieces of candy. Move the candy into 2 groups that have equal amounts. You should have 5 pieces of candy in each group for a fair share. You can keep practicing with larger numbers. Count out 16 pieces of candy. Make a fair share for two people (8 and 8). Next, use the 16 pieces to make fair shares for four friends! Did you give each friend 4 pieces of candy? Good job!

Math

Let’s play a game called Bears in a Cave to review parts of number 10. You need a partner, 10 small items and a bowl or cup as the “cave”. Count out the 10 items and then close your eyes. Have your partner hide some of the items “in the cave” while your eyes stay closed. When you open your eyes, tell your partner how many items are outside of the cave and how many are hiding inside the cave. See the examples in the pictures on this slide: There are 3 bears outside and 7 bears inside. 3 and 7 makes 10. There are 8 bears outside of the cave and 2 bears inside. 8 and 2 makes 10. You can extend this by having them write the number combinations for each.
