Principles of a Just Transition

  • Workers, community residents & indigenous peoples around the world have a fundamental human right to clear air, water, land & food in their workplaces, homes & environment
  • There is no contradiction among simultaneously creating sustainable development, having a healthy economy and maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Liberalization of environmental, health and labor laws and corporate globalization know no borders. Therefore, solutions call for local, regional, national & global solidarity.
  • The development of fair economy, trade, health & safety and environmental policies must include both the frontline workers and fenceline communities most affected by pollution, ecological damage and economic restructuring.
  • The costs of achieving sustainable development, a healthy economy and clean environment should not be borne by current or future victims of environmental and economic injustices and unfair free trade policies
  • Workers & community residents had the right to challenge any entity the commits economic and/or environmental injustices. These entities include governments, military, corporations, international bodies and mechanism for securing corporate accountability.

Our Core Analysis of the COP21 Agreement

  • The Paris Agreement is not based on what is scientifically necessary to address the climate crisis.
  • The agreement allows countries to claim reductions through pollution trading schemes - otherwise known as “carbon neutrality” - rather than requiring actual reductions of pollution emissions - at the source.
  • The agreement includes reliance on dirty energies and false solutions including fracking, nuclear power, Agro-fuels, and others.
  • The agreement weakens or strips the rights of reparations owed to Global South by the Global North
  • The operating text of the agreement does not include any mention of human rights or the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
