Your student’s planner is going to be one of their most important tools this school year. Please check it regularly. Homework will vary from week to week, but will have some of the following components:

Home Reading: Students will show their reading by completing a quarterly reading log to be initialed by their parent.

Social Studies: Students in fifth grade will learn all the state and capital names for the United States.

Math/ELA: Students will have math and ELA homework bi-weekly. Math homework is meant to be a way for students to practice skills they have already learned in class and generally isn’t meant to be a challenge. .

Spelling: Students will have weekly spelling tests. Spelling words are sent home by the unit and are in a sleeve in the homework section in their notebooks. Each week students will need to complete one spelling practice page.

Late/Missing Work: Students will be required to complete all missing work. In the event of illness, pre-arranged absence, etc., I will work with the student to make a plan to complete missing work.

Hello families! I’m looking forward to a wonderful year of learning!

Snacks

We will have a snack time each day at our morning recess time. Students are welcome to bring a healthy snack such as fruit, cheese, crackers, yogurt, etc. to school.

Agreements

  1. Show Respect
  2. Make Good Decisions
  3. Solve Problems

Management

Students will sit in teams in my classroom and do many group activities. Work will still be assessed on an individual basis and teams will switch often so students can get a chance to work with many of their peers. I also keep track of students’ homework completion.

Although students will earn points in groups and individually for positive actions, negative behaviors will be dealt with on an individual basis. In general the following progression will be used as a guideline for dealing with behavior issues but may be bypassed depending on the severity of the infraction.

AVID

We are an AVID elementary school. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID Elementary resources, training, and philosophy are all grounded in the idea that the growth mindset can be taught to students, and it is through the growth mindset that AVID students succeed in following their dreams.

AVID Citizen of the Week

This year your fifth grade student will have the chance to earn AVID Student of the Week. This student will:

  • Show model behavior in the classroom and on the playground (or show significant growth in this area)
  • Have all of their work turned in for the week
  • Pass their weekly binder check
  • Have perfect attendance for the week

Birthdays

Birthdays are celebrated once a month on the last Friday of each month or with the closest holiday. Students who choose to bring treats for their birthday must bring enough for everyone and all treats must be store bought.
