One of the reasons that gas prices are so high is because (in California), there are strict laws against pollution requiring cars to burn cleaner, but more expensive blends of gasoline. (source4).

The main reason why gas is so expensive is a result of the great demand of crude oil. Over the past few years, a growing global economy has demanded more industrial resources (oil) in growing industrial markets such as China. This has sent global demand for crude oil skyrocketing. Overall, this has made oil a lot harder to get and therefore more expensive.(source6).
