In Mineola, we are intentional about building systems that will prepare our students to become life long learners, develop a learner identity.

We have also been intentional about making clear connections between these systems and our mission, vision and instructional model.

In the spirit of continuous improvement, we recognized an opportunity communicate these connections.

As a result, a committee of administrators and teachers representing all buildings and levels throughout Mineola began the process of developing the Mineola Grows Guidebook for Preparing Life Long Learners.

The intention of this guidebook is to make visible a clear PK- 12 progression of the age appropriate essential competencies and skills that we know will prepare our learners to have strength of character, to pursue excellence, and to contribute to society not only throughout their years in Mineola, but beyond.

self management/ emotional relgulation (goal setting; managing stress and emotion and big feelings)

empathy; perspective taking (listening, communicating; relationships. navigating conflicts)

that all young people need to be succssful in life

These portfolios have provided a place to have them learn to plan, intentionally. This is a life skill.. this process creates a habit for them that helps them goal set, reflect, and self-manage.

Each year beginning in grade 3, learners will use self assessments and surveys to identify their strengths, interests, and areas for growth in the essential knowledge, skills and competencies necessary to thrive in and beyond high school

As our learners are now moving up to the HS we have the vision of what we want portfolios to look like in the HS.

Many years ago, the portfolio was first introduced in the high school to As with a traditional "portfolio", the intention was for learners to collect their best works so that they could showcase them to prospective colleges and employers.

Seniors created portfolios that captured their learning journey and accomplishments and the portfolios were sent to colleges as an impressive artifact.

As we began to have district level conversations about portfolios, we recognized that if we were to evolve our portfolio practices we needed to hear feedback straight from the source. Members of our HS portfolio committee (Wade) set up a series of interviews with high school learners from all grades to hear their thoughts and ideas.

NYS CDOS Standard 2: Demonstrate the integration and application of academic, life and occupational skills in their school learning, work, and personal lives.

NY SEL 1C.4b. Monitor progress toward longer-term goals, identifying indicators that align with their priorities.

The New York State Standards for Career Development and Occupation require that by the end of high school, learners should be able to "demonstrate the integration and application of academic, SEL and occupational skills in their school, work and personal lives"

When Mineola learners enter the high school, they will begin integrate the competencies and skills they have identified, practiced and developed in elementary and middle school.

As they apply these skills in real time, they will continue to document, reflect, and set goals, make plans and carry out these goals in their learner portfolios, using the portfolio process to assist them through the awareness process of shifting from short term "Now" planning to preparing themselves to make decisions for their future and life after high school.
