Please place your theme statements from last class (if you have them) on your desk, take out your SSR book, and read silently.

No book?

Please tell me why you don’t have a book today and describe the kinds of books (or movies) you enjoy so I can help you find a book. When was the last time you read a book that you liked? What was it?

This is what I will be looking for in the box at the end of class:

1. Piece of paper for your group with
1. 3 strong theme statements
2. 3 complete thesis statements
3. All of your names on it

Follow along with my visual thought process in the next few slides to see how I want you to think about theme statements.

Then, use those ideas to revise (or rewrite) 3 strong theme statements with your partner/group from last class.

You must turn this in at the end of class.

Steps to a strong theme statement

(Zootopia example)

1. Theme

2. What are some examples of this theme?

Predators are aggressive

Prey are gentle and passive (but the lamb is manipulative)

Bunnies can’t be cops (not true!)

Foxes are not trustworthy (again, not true!)

Hmm… Seems like the stereotypes are being proven wrong…

So what is the movie trying to say about stereotypes?

Now, choose 2 of your excellent, polished theme statements to find 2 pieces of evidence for from the novel.

At the bottom of your theme statement paper, use the guidelines on the next slide to attempt to turn each theme statement into a thesis statement.

Yes, I want you to try to come up with 3 subtopics for each statement. You can do it.

How to turn a theme statement into a thesis statement.

Must include:

• Title of book (underlined!)
• Name of author
• Theme statement
• 3 body paragraph topics

Read Fallen Angels

For the remainder of the class period, you should be reading and annotating Fallen Angels. I don’t know what page you are on, but try to read a whole chapter or approximately 12 pages.

Please do this as quietly as you would if I was there.
