What is Multiage?

A deliberate, mixed-age, heterogeneous grouping of children that stays or “loops” with the same teacher for multiple years. E.g. K/1, K-2

What is Multiage?

It is focused on developmental readiness instead of grade level. Teachers are supportive of a continuum of growth.

Benefits of Multiage

• Olders mentor youngers. They assume leadership roles and more responsibility.�
• Youngers have role models to learn from. They grow into leaders with time.�
• Community-based. Students learn to appreciate the importance of their community.�
• Flexible groupings�
• Strong teacher/student relationship over time�

• Teachers have increased knowledge of students’ abilities and needs.�
• Decreased assessment time at beginning of the year. Teacher already knows returning students and can hit the ground running!�
• Students have decreased transition anxiety from year to year.�
• Younger & new students learn classroom routines from older students by demonstration.

Curriculum

• Reading, writing, science and social studies will be integrated and taught multiage.�
• Students will access the curriculum at a developmentally appropriate level. �
• PE, music, art, field trips, and events will be multiage.�
• Math will be the only subject that is regrouped by grade-level.

FAQ: Will the olders receive lower level instruction?

No!

Teachers will use the Common Core Standards which were designed as a continuum of concepts and skills across grade levels.

Next Steps

You will have the opportunity to indicate a preference for a multi-age or a single grade classroom for next year.
