How have you “celebrated” this month in the past? What have you learned? Who did you learn about? Friday, January, 29, 2021 Happy Friday Fourth Grade, Congratulations on finishing the second week of hybrid learning. This week went a bit smoother than last week as we all got more comfortable with our daily routines in this new phase of school. When you are not at school but at home learning, work to engage deeply, participate actively, and come prepared daily so that you make the most of each school day. The best thing to do when things around you are changing rapidly and there is uncertainty daily, is to be the most consistent you can in your actions and work. We are going to make this a powerful year regardless of the circumstances. This morning, after getting a few requests from fourth grade students, we will journal about the video Stereo that we watched in Town Hall on Wednesday. Watch the video again and see if there is anything new that you notice and want to write about. Dig in and write a strong reflection. Stay actively involved with the discussion today and work to think about how you have been impacted by these stereotypes that are in the air we breathe. Continue to actively “do the work” with your supportive community. This morning, we will add another word to our blossoming vocabularies. Tuesday, January 19, 2021 Welcome Back Fantastic Fourth Graders, Today, we will start on our next journey of this complicated school year. As we begin our “hybrid learning model” work to be focused, patient, and personally motivated. Be ready for a slightly slower day as we get acclimated. This morning, there will be no journal as we figure out how our day will go. If at home, use this time to set up for the day, check over Google Classroom for unfinished work, do Typing Club, and have all materials ready for the day! Mr. Lee and Mr. Hampton

Friday, January 15, 2021 Happy Friday Fourth Grade, Today is Martin Luther King Jr.’s actual birthday. Take a minute to think about this amazing man who gave his life to fight for freedom and love. As we see images and videos of hate shown to us daily on news channels, find some comfort in his message “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that”. We all are in need of a little love right now! This week has been a long week and I hope you are ready to step into a long weekend before our next challenge. Next week, we will begin to return to school and figure out how to make the most out of a constantly changing school year. I know we can do it together! This morning we will reflect on what we know about Martin Luther King Jr. and what his legacy means to us. We will also think about what impact we can have in the world to continue to spread his message of love and freedom for all. Write a strong journal that shows depth and care. Right now, while you read, the covid vaccine is beginning to be tested and even given out to the front line workers. This morning in our journal we will spend time reflecting on the holiday season and what traditions you and your family hold around these holidays. Thursday, December 10, 2020 Good Morning 4th Grade, While we wish we were meeting with you at our physical meetup today, we are excited to have class with you and get to continue our year long work together. I hope yesterday’s Town Hall around gender identity gave you some new ideas to think about and helped you to think about and learn more about your own gender identity. Gender identity is a fluid concept and one that will change and further develop as you mature and age. This morning we will add another word to our growing vocabularies. As of today, we have collected 10 new vocabulary words to use in daily life. How many of them have you used in unrelated stories or family conversations? Just like everything else, practice with these words are the key to truly adding them to your vocabularies. Work hard and write a strong journal using all 10 words. Friday, October 16, 2020 Happy Friday Fourth Graders, T.G.I.F! I hope you have had a good short week and are excited about the upcoming weekend. As a class, we have displayed strong work this week and are beginning to show more involvement and participation in all classes. Let’s continue this growth, knowing that active participation and focus = knowledge acquisition! Which means, you can’t learn if you are not trying to learn! This morning,we will take some time to think about down syndrome. October is down syndrome awareness month and this morning we will learn a little about what down syndrome is. Do you know what down syndrome is? Down syndrome is a condition in which a person is born with an extra chromosome (or packages of genes in the body). This extra copy changes how the baby’s body and brain develop, which can cause both mental and physical challenges for the baby. Each year, about 6,000 babies born in the United States have Down syndrome. Work this morning to find out more and continue to think about our responsibilities with our growing awareness of the world around us! Tuesday, October 6, 2020 Good Morning Conference Ready 4th Graders, Be here now! This is our daily motto. Make sure to make the most out of our time together today and everyday. Think about what benefits you will get today, if and only if, you are present. Then make the best decision for your day and your learning. Be here with us! Have you used either of our 2 WOW words in conversation? Remember that growing your vocabulary is an active task that takes effort and thought. However, once you start to use a word correctly in everyday conversation, it becomes yours forever. Today, we will add another WOW word to our growing list. Work through the act of reading the word, reading through the sentences, looking for context clues and generating some ideas for a definition. Monday, September 14, 2020 Welcome Back Fabulous Fourth Grade, I hope you had a great weekend and got the chance to breathe some fresh air. Although it has been a tough start to the school year in this new Zoom format, we have had such a great time getting to know you better and starting to build our community. As there are many things that we cannot control happening around us, work this week to join us with a positive, motivated attitude...as that is the one thing that you can control! Today, we will have our first weekend update journal. Spend time today writing about your weekend. Work to give as much description as you can and paint the picture of where you were, what you were doing, how you felt about it, and who you were with. You do not have to tell about all of your weekend, but instead can focus mainly on one event as long as you include detail. Write long and strong. Mr. Lee and Mr. Hampton

What are practices that you need to strengthen or work harder in? Remember that every challenge requires us to think, plan and work in a new way in order to meet the demands of the new challenge. Distance learning is definitely a challenge. Continue to find ways to rise to this challenge and tighten your habits and practices. Today, we have a chapel and then we will meet for a short morning meeting. You will also have your first Google Classroom assignment, a short math assessment to show us where you currently are. Thursday, September 3, 2020 Good Morning Journaling Fourth Graders, Yesterday, we had our second Town Hall where we worked to build on our first conversation and define the terms we will use this year in conversations around race. I hope you enjoyed being together as a cohort and hearing your peers opinions and ideas. We also had our first journal of the year and practiced following all the directions and getting our ideas out on paper. Today, we will continue learning about our math brains, work on our challenge math problem, and complete our second journal of the year which is talking about yourself as a learner.
