What is Islandora?

Islandora is an open-source software framework designed to help institutions and organizations and their audiences collaboratively manage, and discover digital assets using a best-practices framework.

Why Islandora?

Drupal. Website front-end is part of the package. Easy, incredibly customizable, commonly adopted open-source content management system.
Customization. Pick and choose modules and viewers to make Islandora fit your needs. Easy to customize.
Support. Active community of users providing support & development. Multiple service companies available for paid support.
Extendable. Integrates readily with other popular open source platforms, like ArchivesSpace and Open Journal Systems.
Store Anything. Any file type. Any metadata.
Open Source. Free to use. Developed in the open. Islandora and everything in it is open source and always will be.

Drupal: This probably goes without saying for this audience, but in general this is one of the biggest upsides for Islandora. We get a website for free. We also love Drupal’s GUI and being able to put so much site-building power in the hands on non-developers. Plus, we rely on community support, so nestling into the much, much larger Drupal community and being able to take advantage of the world of Drupal contrib modules is huge.

Customization: A lot of this comes from Drupal, but it also applies to Islandora-specific tools and microservices You only need to install and maintain the parts that do the things you need to do. You can leave the rest on the table, or add it in later if a need develops.

Support: Active community, peer support, and experienced vendors who also give back to the project.

Extendable: Islandora plays nicely with other popular open sources tools in the library world, such as Archivesspace and OJS

Store Anything: A key feature in Drupal as a DAMs. We have solutions tailored for a lot of common digital media types, with viewers and microservices, but if you need to store something more esoteric, you can still put it into this system with metadata so it can be preserved and shared. With Drupal fields, you build your own forms and metadata profiles, so that’s also wide open.

Open: also a bit redundant for a Drupal audience, but we feel like it bears repeating All of this is free and open source. The code is transparent you don’t have to pay anything to use it.
