Using Google My Maps in the Classroom

How to Log into Google My Maps:

  1. Log into your Google Drive
  2. Click on New
  3. Click on more
  4. Click on Google My Maps

Add a title to your Map

Choose your Base Map

  • View each base map by clicking on the picture
  • Then choose your base map

How to use Google My MapTools:

  • This is the hand tool. You use this to move around the map. If you double click, you can zoom in as well.
  • This is the most important tool. This allows you to add a marker to your map. This allows you to mark different locations on the map.
  • This is the add a line or shape tool.

  • This is the add directions tool.
  • This is the ruler tool. This is used to measure distances and areas.
  • These are the undo and redo tools.

How to use Google My MapTools:

Click on the three dots to:

  • Create a new map
  • Copy a map
  • Open a map
  • Move to trash (delete a map)
  • Print a map
  • ….

How to use Google My MapTools:

  • Use the + and - keys in the lower right corner of the map to zoom in and out of the map.
  • Use the Hand tool to move around the map also as you are zooming in and out.

How to Mark a location on the Map: Option 1

  • Using the add a marker tool,
  • Click on the location you would like to pinpoint on the map.
  • Here you can title the location, add a description of the location, add an image or link to a video about this location.

How to Mark a location on the Map: Option 2

  • You can search for the location first so you can more accurately mark the location.
  • Once you have the location, you can use the add marker tool.
  • Then you can, just like in option 1, add a title the location, add a description of the location, add an image or link to a video about this location.

Add layers to your Map

  • You can add layers to your map by clicking on the add layers icon.
  • You can click on the three dots to rename, delete, or open a table oh the layer
  • You can also Import data to a layer.

Sharing your Google My Map

  • Click on the Share Icon to share your Map
  • Add a title and description and click OK

Sharing your Google My Map

  • For Quick Sharing: Toggle on Enable link sharing
  • Copy and paste link to your Google Classroom or in an email.

  1. Search for your favorite place

4. Continue steps 1, 2, and 3 for two more places

5. When you are done enable link sharing and share your link with me in (ie..teacher choice: Google Classroom, or email, in a google doc,….)
