Summary of the history of SPECTRA

In 1980’s Denver, Boulder, and Aspen passed ordinances protecting gays and lesbians from discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations.

In 1992 Colorado passed an amendment to the state constitution that invalidated local ordinances in Denver, Boulder, and Aspen banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

The Joint Mathematics Meetings, JMM, was scheduled to take place in Denver in 1995. Some mathematicians voiced their concern about the location.

Summary of the history of SPECTRA (cont)

In 1995 JMM was moved to San Francisco. First reception for LGBTQ mathematicians.
The Colorado State Supreme Court ruled the Amendment unconstitutional in 1994. The US Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional in 1996.
