SELF-DETERMINATION

The process by which a person controls his/her own life.

According to research by Bacon, Walker, Schwartz, O’Hara, Calkins, and Wehmeyer (2011), “Self-determination increases are easily established in a vocational setting. Increases in self-determination have been correlated with enhanced ‘social capital’ or connection with those in the surrounding community, greater choice and control, as well as enhanced health and economic success.”

Project UNITED is a transition education program designed for students with disabilities. Eligible students, ages 18-22, must have completed all requirements for high school graduation. Once accepted, students will attend Griffin Region College and Career Academy (GRCCA).

What skills do students in Project UNITED learn?

Why is it important for students to learn these skills in a real-world environment?

Students that participate in Project UNITED are able to display their abilities and build confidence while generalizing skills in the community.

Furthermore, Project UNITED provides:

  • exposure to real-life situations
  • a sense of community
  • career and job sampling
  • a sense of accomplishment and pride
  • an increase in self-determination
