SESSION OVERVIEW

LEARNING GOALS

-We are learning about Breakout EDU

-We are learning how educators could use an Escape Room with students to enhance teaching, learning, and engagement

AGENDA

-We are learning what comes in Breakout EDU box, what the basic rules and concepts of the game are, and how educators can use it

-We are considering reasons for using Breakout EDU, when we could use it, and who we could use it with, as well as caveats

-We are playing a digital version of the game, reviewing key concepts, and visiting the Breakout EDU website (if time permits)

SUCCESS CRITERIA

-We will be successful if we are able to understand how Breakout EDU works and can conceive of how to apply and adapt it in our classrooms

What is Breakout EDU?

Breakout EDU is a way to turn your classroom into an ESCAPE ROOM.

You can purchase a box, build and acquire your own equipment or make a digital version (or you can do all three).

Keys and Locks

6

Clues (both physical and digital) are hidden around your classroom.

Breakout EDU - Digital Version

Google Site

Google Site allows you to write text, paste pictures, and embed other Google Apps, including Google Forms, on the website.

Google Form

Google Form allows students to input answers (words, numbers, codes, etc.), give hints, and only accept the right answer.

Response Validation

Response validation is a feature of Google Forms which enables one correct answer and a hint for each question.

STAFF P.D.

A great tool for professional development

Breakout EDU can be useful for introducing a concept. In this session we explored TVO’s TeachOntario on the 2016-2017 OSSTF P.A. day.

What about student images?

25

Be careful about putting student images or students’ personal information on the Internet.

You may want to take pictures without student faces, use filters to conceal student identities.
