When what’s going on inside a person comes out into the light.

Luke 6:43-45
43 “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
God is the gardener of the tree of my heart and from that tree grows the fruit of my life.
Proverbs 4:23
Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.
If the “fruit” of my life is not what I desire for it to be… Not what God designed it to be. There is a problem with the tree.
You don’t simply choose to have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control
Short term it might see like you can manifest those fruit of the spirit “feelings” until circumstance kicks you in the face.
Ultimately the healthier your heart, meaning the more you are following the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the more the fruit of living in the spirit will be present in your life.
