Best Practices

The IRW program was developed using the following best practices identified in published research on developmental reading and writing:

  • Just-in-time remediation is a best practice identified in the research on developmental education.
  • Instructors are encouraged to support their students in correcting grammar and mechanics in the students’ own writing, rather than completing “skill and drill” activities related to grammar and punctuation.
  • Instructors assess writing skills in 0970 and 0980 through rubrics, specific comments on student work, and quizzes, when appropriate.
