FLOOR CAPTAIN

Roles and Responsibilities

In the case of an emergency or an active drill, the main function of the “Floor Captain” is to validate the evacuation status with the facilities lead.

16 of 35

 Roles

FLOOR CAPTAINS will provide aid to all building occupants and visitors in the event of an emergency in there assigned area. Floor captains are responsible for knowing all exit locations from occupied areas of their building.

**Floor captains are NOT expected to risk their personal safety by delaying their own evacuation from a building to perform rescue or structural fire fighting activities

Key Responsibilities

To help achieve safe, orderly evacuations and provide the best possible aid to others, Floor Captains are to implement these steps whenever a fire alarm begins to sound:

    • At the sound of the evacuation alarm, proceed to an exit and verify it is usable, i.e., free of smoke and obstructions
    • Calmly and clearly go around your assigned area and announce that the building must be evacuated and direct people to leave via this exit in a calm and orderly fashion
    • Caution occupants against the use of elevators
    • Don’t forget to check certain key areas such as pantry areas, bathrooms, etc. to assure that no one is left behind
    • As soon as assigned area has been checked, complete your own evacuation of the building
    • If the recommended evacuation route should become blocked, carefully reroute all evacuees to another available exit
    • Re-entry into the building is not permitted unless Security personnel have given the all clear

KEY

  • Last One Out of Assigned Area
  • Give the all clear to security lead
