Did you know there is a Wellness Policy for OUSD?

4

A Wellness Policy is required of all school districts that participate in the Federal school meal program (most districts)

OUSD’s Wellness Policy outlines vision and goals for healthy and safe students, staff and community.

The current policy is under review and will be updated soon. We will be looking to Site Wellness Champions to provide input from your school communities.

The policy is for all students Pre-K to 12.

While on campus, staff, parents and school partners are expected to support and implement the Policy.

So what is IN the Wellness Policy??

Access to Healthy Food and Beverages Framework

OUSD is committed to providing access to healthy food to all students in OUSD schools throughout the day.

Healthy food gives the body nutrients it needs to maintain health, feel good, and have energy.

Access to healthy food and beverages in school is important because children pay better attention in class, build good eating habits, and are less likely to develop chronic disease like diabetes.

Everyone in our community has a role in helping our students succeed!

16

Goal in 2019-20: Ensure OUSD schools are always places to access healthy food and beverages for students, staff, and families.

Fundraisers & Food Sales

  • Fundraisers are a great way to bring the community together for a common cause.
  • Food sold for fundraisers must meet or exceed Healthy Food Guidelines until 6pm on school days.
  • As options, consider student art auctions, walk-a-thons, and healthy food sales like 100% fruit popsicle

Drinking Water

  • Providing free, clean drinking water to all.
  • Installed water filling stations at schools in 2018-19, to promote in 2019-20 (that’s now!).

Key components of access to healthy food & beverages covered in the Wellness Policy include but are not limited to…

Rewards, Parties, & Events

  • Everyone likes to be appreciated! When offering rewards and incentives, food may not be the answer! Certificates and special opportunities (i.e. extra recess time) can be even more rewarding than pizza.
  • Celebrations and family events are important to the whole community. For events, there are great options like fruit and salad from the garden.

Food from Home

  • Students, families and staff are encouraged to follow OUSD’s Healthy Food Guidelines when bringing snacks, meals or drinks on to campus (no matter what time of day!)
  • Food should not be taken from students as long as it is eaten during designated times in designated school spaces.

  • All elementary students should have at least 30 minutes of recess, as well as active brain breaks.

Key Points about

Learning Gardens in OUSD

OUSD schools can have learning gardens - and many do!

New planning and maintenance forms have been developed to support these school gardens.

If your elementary / middle school site has a school garden, the Garden Steward role may be a good fit.

Key Points about

Staff Wellness

An OUSD Staff Wellness Theory of Action and accompanying strategies are being developed and supported by District leadership. These strategies expand beyond actions by individual staff to look at wellness at a systems level.

Staff Wellness Champions will be key to providing feedback and engaging colleagues in this work.

As a Wellness Champion / School Site Stakeholder…

Know there is a School Board approved district policy to support your work.

It is your role and opportunity to advocate and work with your school community on a wellness action plan for your school.

You are a leader in making these visions and goals real, in a way that is responsive to the needs of your school community.
