Background

Collective defence is one of the main principles of NATO’s founding Treaty

Collective defence is the idea that if there is an attack made upon one ally then this is also an attack on all allies.

NATOs purpose

In 1949, the main point of NATO was to prevent Soviet power from extending too far into Europe

Each country involved agreed to a treaty with each other

Instances where Collective Defence was needed

NATO added in Collective defence which is under Article 5 of the washington post for the first time after the devastating 9/11 attacks in 2001.

The United States have only collective defence measures a couple times because there hasn't been many times where the government thought it was important to.

Another instance is with the existing issues in Syria.

Providing assistance

Allies provide whatever help seen necessary to a certain situation. Assistance can be anything from military to materials

Article 5

If a NATO ally is attacked, all members are considered attacked and they take actions as they see necessary to the situation. Each country can choose what is necessary to respond to the situation.

9/11 attacks on United States soil

After the disgusting attacks on september 11 of 2001, the government knew that they needed to improve their knowledge on terrorism and make sure that they had terrorism under control.

These attacks led to the insertion of Article 5 of the washington treaty for the very first time in the history of the United states.

9/11 aftermath

On October 4th, 2001 after it was 100% confirmed that the recent 9/11 attacks came from abroad, NATO decided to launch their first anti terrorism operation.

Eagle assist was the name of the anti terrorism operations unit lasted from mid october 2001 to mid may 2002.

7 NATO AWACS helped to patrol the skies over the united states to keep our citizens safe.

A total of over 800 crew members from 13 NATO countries worked to keep our beautiful nation safe.

Countries worldwide agree to work together to achieve common goals

To enhance intelligence sharing and cooperation that deal with terrorism and acts that should be taken against it.

Providing assistance to other countries that are involved in NATO. All ally countries will help when other countries may be under attack.

Increase security for our and our allied countries.

Incorporate more anti-terrorism operations and campaigns.

Overflight clearances for the United States and other allied countries.

To provide access for the U.S and other allied countries to ports and airfields on NATO territory, for operations against terrorism.

Ready to act of NATO elements for Airborne Early Warning Force to support operations against terrorism.

To make sure that the alliance is ready to make NATO’s presence felt.

Extra measures

Due to certain circumstances, extra measures are taken in specific places because of the events that have occurred. For example, after the attack in Paris NATO foreign ministers have taken extra precautions and are talking to Syria about a solution to the problem
