Shielded Metal Arc Welding

  • Career as a basic stick welder.
  • One step up on entering the welding field.
  • Gain skills using industry welding equipment and necessary safety procedures.
  • Required Courses
    • Welding 111: Basic Arc/Gas Welding I
    • Welding 112: Basic Arc/Gas Welding II
    • Welding 121: Advanced SMAW & Cutting I
    • *Welding 122: Advanced SMAW and Cutting II

* This course is optional. Students do not need course to complete Shielded Metal Arc certificate.

Course Requirements

  • Attendance is required
  • No sandals in welding classes including lab and lecture.
  • No pants hanging below the waist
  • No short pants
  • No gym shoes
  • No man made fabrics such as polyester, nylon, etc.
  • No hats can be worn in lecture
  • No music devices, I pods, ear phones, etc.
  • No flannel shirts allowed in class.
  • Clothing in all classes the student shall welding industrial safe clothing.

Supplies

  • Safety Glasses
  • Flame resistant welding coat
  • Flame retardant welding hat
  • Safety dress cloths include but are not limited to the following;
    • Leather hi top boots, which come up under pants cuff, shall be worn. Steel toe suggested.
    • 100% cotton or 100% wool socks
    • 100% cotton or 100% wool paints, Jeans or Dockers only with belt or suspenders fitting tight to the waist.
    • Shirt 100% cotton or wool with long sleeves
      • Recommend t-shirt of cotton to be warn under shirt.
  • Welder’s helmet with Nos. 10-11-12, filter lenses
  • Heavy gauntlet style welder’s gloves
  • Chipping Hammer
  • Wire Brush
  • Large pliers or vice grips
  • 1/2 round Bastard File

  • Gas welding & cutting goggles (lens shade 5-6)
  • Flashlight
  • Spark lighter
  • Tape measure
  • Ear Plugs
  • Special Equipment
    • Side Grinder, electric 4 1/2”
    • Tip Cleaner
    • Mig and Tig Students will supply the following:
    • For WP-20 tig torch 1 each;
    • 3/32” Tungsten, Ceriated collet, collet body and #6 gas nozzle
    • 1/16” Ceriated collet, collet body and #6 gas nozzle
    • For Twico Mig gun .035” Contact Tips(5) 1 each gas diffuser and 1 gas nozzle.

    • Fall (August), 1st 8 weeks
    • Mondays and Wednesdays; 1-3:15pm     or
    • Tuesdays and Thursdays; 1-3:15pm
  • Welding 112: Basic Arc/Gas Welding II (3)
    • Fall (October), 2nd 8 weeks
    • Mondays and Wednesdays; 1-3:15pm     or
    • Tuesdays and Thursdays; 1-3:15pm

  • *Welding 121: Advanced SMAW & Cutting I (3)
    • Spring (January), 1st 8 weeks
    • Tuesdays and Thursdays; 1-3:15pm
    • This course will run based on enrollment. There is a 5 person minimum for the class to run. High Schools will be informed if the class is offered in the Spring.

Dual Enrollment Overview

  • Obtaining the 9 college credits while still in high school does not guarantee HS credit or HS graduation credit. Discuss with high school counselor.
  • Final grade is part of your permanent college record
  • All college policies apply
  • MVCC does not provide transportation
  • Students pay full tuition; they are not eligible for financial aid
  • Students must maintain a G.P.A. of a 2.0 to prevent any limitation to their ability to receive financial aid once he/she enters college as a first-time, full-time student.
  • Welding program may be a great for you, but dual enrollment might not be the best format for you.

  4. For Fall , High School Authorization Forms are due to your counselor by March
    • First Payment due May
