Overview Events for 70th anniversary

• Additionally to the main events planned – The Community event on 17 September, and The official ceremony on 1 October - we shall provide public events throughout the year at Science Gateway, with the possibility of streaming a few of them.

​

• Each one of the events shall aim to reach different sub-target audiences, from a more general public to a science-aware public, and be inspired by one of the main topics guiding the 70th year's celebrations.

​

• To achieve such a goal while being resourceful and conscious in terms of main power, we can choose the most impactful items already proposed by the public events programing and re-packing them to align with the 70th anniversary message and topics.

Narrative for the public events for 70th anniversary

To guide the narrative of the event the 70th anniversary celebrations’ leader has proposed the following narrative for the events:

Topic 01 – “Beyond Imagination: CERN’s 70th Years of Scientific Discoveries Unveiling the Universe” (Neural currents to W&Z bosons, light neutrino families at LEP, antimatter atoms, CP violation, new state of matter, Higgs Boson)

Topic 02 – The Roadmap to Discovery: Mapping Particle Physics’ Open Questions and Research Directions” (origin of mass, dark matter, imbalance between matter and antimatter, additional dimensions, nature of neutrinos)

Topic 03 - “Beyond the Horizon: Tackling Particle Physics’ Grande Challenges with Advanced Accelerators” (need of large accelerators, future directions in accelerators, harnessing the power of accelerators in industry and medicine)

Topic 04 - “Innovations at the Frontier: Technological Innovations Driving Breakthroughs in Particle Physics and Beyond” (Particle Accelerators Technologies, WWW, Grid, Superconducting Magnet Technology, Breakthroughs in particle detection technologies and electronic instrumentation, and the science and technology of low-temperature systems)

In addition to the streaming of some of the above-listed events, we could also provide the 70^th anniversary resources kit for those interested in organizing events linked to the celebrations, containing:

• ideas of events format,
• guidelines on how to address the key messages of the 70^th anniversary,
• visual branding of the campaign along with other design materials,
• a video intro (and maybe a closing) produced by CERN,
• In addition, the CERN Alumni team can also help local organizers to get in touch with Alumni regional groups.

In return we would list all these events on a website, collect images and feature them on the CERN social platforms.

Alumni Third Collisions - Feb

February 7 from 19:30 to 21:00 - (just before 9-11 February - Alumni Third Collisions)

• Description: Although it is not planned to be a public event one of its keynote speakers could potentially give a public talk. In fact, David Townsend, an expert in technology for health and alumina of CERN, has been approved as a potential speaker by the public events committee.

PET was not invented at CERN, but the work carried out by Jeavons and Townsend made a major contribution to its development, thanks to the type of detector and computer programme developed for image-taking analysis. After the initial success, Jeavons and Townsend devoted their careers to improving medical imaging. Later, Townsend and co-workers in the US suggested to combine PET-CT (computed tomography) to see both metabolic and anatomic information. De “temps en temps” est une création artistique et scientifique qui explore le rapport au temps ainsi la perception du temps en physique et en musique.

​

Le temps étant un élément central de ces deux disciplines, en plus d’explications présentées par l’altiste du quatuor, un support musical est employé par le quatuor pour illustrer des concepts comme le rubato, le rythme, le musique répétitive etc. En ce qui concerne la physique, on évoque la notion de temps absolu, de temps relatif et ce en passant par des exemples de la physique fondamentale comme la mécanique classique et la relativité restreinte. Ici ce sont des transparents projetés qui servent de support en plus des explications.

• Engage diverse audiences in making sense of the science that shapes their lives.
• Establish CERN as a key voice/forum to convey the importance and relevance of fundamental science in creating knowledge, bringing peoples and nations together through peaceful collaboration and driving innovation.
