Endangered Bees Halt Meta's Nuclear-Powered AI Data Center Plan

  • Meta's plans to set up a nuclear-powered AI data center in the US have been halted in part because a rare bee species was found on the land
  • Which bee species it is, is not yet public
  • Rusty Patched Bumblebee is the only protected bumblebee

Google to buy power for AI needs from small modular nuclear reactor company Kairos

  • Google said on 10/14 it signed the world's first corporate agreement to buy power from multiple small modular reactors to meet electricity demand for artificial intelligence
  • 500 megawatts of power from six to seven reactors

US opens applications for $900 million for small nuclear reactors

  • The funds come from the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law and the Energy Department anticipates offering it in two tiers.
  • Up to $800 million will go to milestone-based awards for support of first mover teams of utility, reactor vendor, constructor, end users and others.
  • $100 million will go to design, licensing, supplier development, and site preparation, the department said

US Awards Uranium-Enrichment Contracts to Centrus, Orano

  • The US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded contracts to BWXT, Centrus, Framatome, GE Vernova, Orano and Westinghouse
  • The contracts will last for up to 10 years, with up to $800 million available in total for these services from a $2.7 billion pool

Construction Underway On Testing Facility At TerraPower’s Wyoming Nuclear Plant Site

  • Under construction is a sodium test and fill facility for the future plant, the first step of many to come before the nuclear plant will come online sometime in 2030
  • TerraPower’s construction permit for the actual nuclear plant is in the hands of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, undergoing an 18 to 24-month review process

USNC declares chapter 11 bankruptcy

  • This move is a critical restructuring phase through which the company will seek to secure new ownership while ensuring uninterrupted operations
  • USNC is currently invested in two separate MMR high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) projects
