  • twice a day, every day of the year, weather balloons are released simultaneously from almost 900 locations worldwide! This includes 92 released by the National Weather Service in the US and its territories. The balloon flights last for around 2 hours, can drift as far as 125 miles away, and rise up to over 100,000 ft. (about 20 miles) in the atmosphere!
  • Weather balloons, which are made of latex or synthetic rubber (neoprene), are filled with either hydrogen or helium. The sides are about 0.051 mm thick before release and will be only 0.0025 mm thick at typical bursting altitudes! The balloons, which start out measuring about 6 ft. wide before release, expand as they rise to about 20 ft.

  • 1-Planning : The challenge that the group chose is near space near you. This challenge depends on two requirements which is developing a prior plan for constructing a high-altitude-balloon (HAB), in addition to minimize the cost of the high-altitude-balloon constructing. none the less, the balloon must achieve more than 20 kilometers. The group started planning for the project early. So, the group confronted little bit of planning problems. The groups plan is to focus on the learning concept of the project to make it much easier for the students, moreover, the group didn’t miss the developing part. So, the group decided to replace the constructing materials of the common balloons by another analogous materials which reduces the cost; furthermore, makes it more accessible.
  • Before launching our flight, pre-flight predictions should be made to get an idea of ​​where our trip will go. There are many calculators online to help with this. Most of them will allow us to make predictions for our flight starting 7 days before the launch date. This will help us determine if the launch is safe or not and/or if we want to move the launch site to a different location or adjust the balloon size or rate of ascent to avoid risks. For example, if the itinerary is over an airport or a large body of water, we should consider changing the launch location, the size/filling of our balloon, or waiting a few days for a different wind profile. Ideally, we want it to land in open farmland. This allows for a safe and easy recovery

Tracking and recovery:-

Most balloon flights at high altitudes aim to fully recover their payloads. Usually, this is for getting data, photos, or videos on the plane or just to reuse the package again on another flight. To do this, we will need some kind of onboard tracking system so that we can follow our flight and find the landing site when our mission is complete. Most of the time we will lose visual contact with the weather balloon payload after only a few minutes, so we will need to rely on something that can record and relay the weather balloon location throughout the flight

First part of the balloon the head is made from nylon cord and is usually filled up by hydrogen or helium gas

Second part is the parachute and it is used when the balloon is out of gas and start to fall its used to avoid damaging of GPS and data in

a camera and GPS to the ends of the parachute’s shroud lines. Make sure all attachments are secure.
