The three main goals of the Grade 9 science course are for students:
Safety
Science is a hands-on laboratory class. You will be doing many laboratory activities which require the use of hazardous chemicals, electricity and biological samples. Safety in the science classroom is the #1 priority for students, teachers, and parents.

Fundamental Concepts and Big Ideas
Assessment
Science is about making sense of the world through the gathering of data. Similarly assessment in this course will be about gathering data. You will be given frequent feedback on your progress and participate in the evaluation process by giving input on your achievement. In order to do this you must be reflective about your growth as a scientist..
Summative assessment items have been chosen for students to demonstrate evidence of acquisition of essential knowledge and skills required for credit in this course.
All summative work submitted for evaluation throughout the year (as communicated by the teacher) MUST be completed in order to achieve credit in the course
It is the teacher’s responsibility to clearly outline expectations for each evaluative item and to clearly communicate a due date.
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure EACH evaluative item is completed, and submitted by the due date.
Assessment item(s) not submitted by the due date will receive a mark below 50%, based on what learning was demonstrated, and may jeopardize success in the course. Due dates are designed to pace learning & provide timely feedback on current, relevant material.
The essential learning required for major assessment items will still need to be demonstrated, ie. at a future date at the teacher’s discretion and the teacher will use his/her professional judgment to determine an appropriate final course mark. The student is at great risk of failure should any summative work not be completed.
Note: Unfortunately, extenuating circumstances occasionally occur that may prevent, or interfere with, the student being able to honour a due date. The expectation is that the student and/or parent/guardian will communicate/email with the course teacher before the due date to discuss next steps.
MISSED ASSESSMENTS
Should a student miss a test or quiz, students are expected to be prepared to write upon their return OR on an Instructional Support Day at midterm or end-of-semester (to the teachers discretion)
Should a student miss a lab, they will be expected to make it up during a lunch period (to the teachers discretion)
Should a student miss an assignment, the student is expected to follow up with the teacher for the instructions.

Student
Plagiarism, including theft and misrepresentation of original work, cheating, and false representation of identity, will result in appropriate consequences. The teacher will inform administration and meet with the student to determine the nature and extent of the incident, the student’s understandings of the situation and intent.

Safety contract
- Follow all instructions given by the teacher
- Protect their eyes, face, hands and body with appropriate PPE when involved in science experiments
- Carry out good housekeeping practices (keep a tidy lab bench) and clean up after labs
- Know the location of the first aid kit, eye wash station, fire blanket and fire extinguisher
- Conduct themselves in a responsible manner at all times (no running or horseplay in the lab area)
- Not bring any food, gum or drinks into the science room
