Research Publication - LFR Waiter: Arduino Based Waiter Robot

Title: “Arduino-Based Android-Controlled Robo Waiter” (IEEE TENCON 2022)

  • Designed and implemented an Android-controlled waiter robot for restaurant automation during COVID-19.
  • Integrated Arduino Mega2560, IR sensors,

and Bluetooth (HC-05) for wireless control.

  • Used PID algorithm for accurate line

following and ultrasonic sensor for

obstacle detection.

  • Achieved 98% path-following accuracy,

93% obstacle avoidance, and 99% delivery success

  • Demonstrated routing and path optimization in a real-time

environment — similar to network flow modeling in transportation systems.

Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis of Prioritizing Sidewalk Repairs in Providence, RI, Considering Budget Constraint

Sidewalk Repair Prioritization (MCDA + Knapsack)

  • Goal: Prioritize sidewalk repairs transparently under a fixed budget.
  • Data: 10 sidewalk segments scored on 6 factors — condition, cost, ADA issues, population density, % disabled residents, and proximity to school/transit.
  • Method:
    • Normalize criteria and apply fixed weights.
    • Compute a Priority Index (PI) for each segment (weighted sum).
    • Use a 0–1 knapsack model to choose the set of segments that maximizes total PI within a $190k budget.
  • Result: Optimal combo (S1, S5, S2) balances poor condition, equity needs, and budget.
  • Takeaway: Simple framework that cities can tune with stakeholder input to make sidewalk repair decisions more fair and data-driven.
