Game Card

Silent Saturday is April 12th

Silent Saturday is a throwback to the old schoolyard days when kids would congregate after school and on weekends just to play all day, without regard to who was winning and repercussions for poor play and decision-making. Coaches are requested to communicate and reinforce this with spectators!

The objectives of Silent Saturday are:

  • To emphasize that the game is about letting the kids have fun and play.
  • To show that kids can play well on their own with limited instruction.
  • To help the few parents and coaches who feel they must provide constant direction, understand how disruptive it can be.
  • To give players the chance to trust their skills and instincts without sideline input.
  • To encourage leadership skills among the individual players as they have the unique opportunity of giving their own instruction on the field.
  • To encourage a sense of true teamwork as the players must learn to rely upon one another and communicate with each other accordingly.
  • To support our volunteer referees, both youth and adult, by eliminating sideline interference and comments.

The spirit of Silent Saturdays is to allow players to make decisions and learn the game. After all, if the child doesn’t make their own mistakes, it will hinder their development in the sport. If parents think their children are confused and don’t know what to do without sideline instruction, that’s an indication that players haven’t been allowed to make their own decisions. Players will learn the game by making their own decisions, learning from their mistakes, and continuing to play.

  • Importance to create and maintain a positive experience for your player(s):
    • Let the coaches and referees do their job and don’t criticize them. Refrain from coaching from the sidelines. If your child is having to look at you because you’re calling them then they are not listening to the coach or even looking where the ball is. Let the players read the game and make the judgement for themselves.

  • Zero Tolerance:
    • Our coaches and referees and board members are all volunteers!!The job of the referee is to keep the game fun, fair and safe. What you see from the sidelines will be different than what the referee sees.
    • Referees know the laws of the game. If you disagree with a call do not yell out or even approach the referee. The referee will give a yellow card warning to the coach to maintain their sidelines and the coach will ask to cease; if they can’t get you to stop you will be politely asked to leave the field. Coaches can’t argue calls either. We will discuss that with them at the Coaches meeting.

Volunteers: Team Support

WHY DO WE NEED VOLUNTEERS?

  • Volunteers power the Region. Without Volunteers AYSO soccer would not exist. Volunteers strengthen AYSO by giving their time, energy along with their ideals and ideas. We absolutely need your help!

WHO CAN BE A VOLUNTEER?

  • Almost anyone can volunteer. Moms, Dads, Sisters, Brothers, Grandparents, even players themselves! AYSO needs all of you to help make our Soccer program a fantastic experience for our kids!

20 of 29

Volunteers: Team Support

  • 2 adults in addition to coaches are REQUIRED at every practice.
    • For girls’ teams at least 1 female parent at every practice (NOT THE COACH’S WIFE).
  • Show up and stay for every practice.
  • You can have one parent volunteer attend all practices or have a few parents alternate days.
  • If no one volunteers, create a rotating schedule where each family FULFILLS ONE WEEK.
  • Assist coaches with tying shoes, bandaging players, calming children who fall or get hit with the ball, keeping kids in order during practice drills, etc…

21 of 29

Volunteers: Team Support

  • Cheer for the opposing team
  • Players line up to high five the opposing team and the Refs. Be sure to thank the Refs!
  • Parents form a tunnel for the players to run through after high fives are completed
  • Pass out the after game snack

Sideline Behavior

Parents

As a parent, you play a special role in contributing to the needs and development of our children. Through your encouragement and good example, you can help assure that all the boys and girls learn good sportsmanship and self-discipline. In AYSO, young people learn to work together, to sacrifice for the good of the team, to enjoy winning and deal appropriately with defeat – all while becoming physically fit and healthy. Best of all, they have fun.

    • Support Your Child – Supporting your child by giving encouragement and showing interest in his/her team is very important. Help your child work toward skill improvement and good sportsmanship in every game. Teach your child that hard work and an honest effort are more important than victory – that way your child will always be a winner despite the outcome of the game!
    • Always Be Positive – Parents serve as role models for their children. Become aware of this and work to be a positive role model. Applaud good plays by your child’s team as well as good plays by the opposing team. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from youth sports activities.
    • Remember: Your Child Wants To Have Fun – Remember that your child is the one playing soccer, not you. It’s very important to let children establish their own goals – to play the game for themselves. Take care not to impose your own standards and goals on them. Don’t put too heavy a burden on your child to win games. Surveys reveal that 72% of children would rather play for a losing team than ride the bench for a winning team. Children play for the fun of playing.
    • Reinforce Positive Behavior – Positive reinforcement is the best way to help your child achieve his/her goals and overcome his/her natural fear of failure. Nobody likes to make mistakes. If your child does make one, remember its all part of learning. So encourage your child’s efforts and point out the good things your child accomplished.
    • Don’t Be a Sideline Coach or Referee – Coaches and referees are usually parents just like you. They volunteer their times to help make your child’s youth soccer experience a positive one. They need your support too. That means refraining from coaching or refereeing from the sidelines. Your “instructions,” if even heard by the children, are more often confusing and distracting rather than helpful. If you really need to coach or referee, remember that as a volunteer organization, there’s always an opportunity for you to take your interest in coaching or refereeing to the next level and to become one yourself!

Sideline Behavior

Coaches

Coaches must remain in “the technical area” (on the sideline, within 10 yards of the halfway line).  Whether or not the technical area is painted, coaches must go no further from the halfway line than the edge of the center circle.

  • Only coaches may “coach” (i.e., instruct and direct the players).  Others on the sideline should cheer and encourage, but never coach.
  • Coach participation in matches is limited to comments that are positive, instructional, or encouraging.
  • A coach should not speak to opposing players, except perhaps to compliment them on their play.
  • Coaches and spectators are not entitled to question the referee’s calls or ask for explanations during a match.
  • Coaches are not permitted on the field unless specifically invited by the referee. Exceptions: (6U and 8U)
  • Alcohol and tobacco products are prohibited at AYSO games and practices, and in the immediate vicinity of AYSO fields.
  • AYSO games (and practices) require a certified, currently registered AYSO coach.
  • AYSO scheduled games require a certified, currently registered AYSO referee. If there is no referee, there can be no game, but the teams may still scrimmage.
