Absences

You should always call or email the school and/or me to report your child’s absence. kjvenn@mpsomaha.org or jkmeier@mpsomaha.org If your child misses one day, it will not be necessary to send for their homework. We will help them make up their work at school. If they are absent more than one day, please make arrangements to get his/her work. You can do this by calling the school secretary that morning or emailing your child’s teacher.

Assessments

Third graders will have the following assessments. Exact testing dates will be announced as we get closer to the assessment. Please avoid scheduling appointments, etc. during testing times. MAP testing will be taken in the Fall, Winter and Spring. The state test is NSCAS. There is both an ELA and Math test and they will be taken in the spring.

Before School

The first morning bell rings at 8:20. Students may arrive no earlier than 8:10, as there will be no supervision until that time. Third graders will meet and line up in the front or back of the building.

Birthdays

Children may bring store bought treats (pre-cut) for their birthday if they wish. Please include the ingredient label and napkins for serving. If your child has a summer birthday, they may choose to bring treats for their half birthday. Please avoid treats with nuts. Students are asked not to pass out birthday invitations or thank-you cards at school, unless invitations are for the entire class.

Communication

Communication with families is important! Due to limited time during the school day to make and receive phone calls, please feel free to e-mail us in order to receive a more timely response. If you have a more sensitive question or concern, please do not hesitate to call us at school before students arrive or after they leave.

Departmentalizing

Third graders will be switching teachers/subjects throughout the day. Mr. Fleming and I will departmentalizing. I will be teaching reading, spelling, grammar and social studies. Mr. Fleming will be teaching math, science, and writing.

Miss Steensma, Miss Clay, and Mrs. Wurtele will be implementing the “Walk-To” model in the areas of Math and Reading. Students will receive the whole group lesson within their homeroom, then walk to the teacher’s room where small group instruction will be taught based on the student’s needs. All other subject areas will be delivered in their homerooms.

Field Trips

Third graders usually plan 1-2 field trips throughout the year. As time gets closer, we will inform families about our upcoming field trip plans. Our field trip(s) are tied to our science standards and our study of Omaha.

Grades

Third graders will receive percentage grades. You will have access to their grades through Synergy/ParentVue. If you have any questions, please ask.

Grading Scale: 93-100% = 1

85-92% = 2

77-84% = 3

69-76% = 4

0-68% = 5

Homework

Students will have a spelling list to study during a full week of school. From time to time, your child may also have unfinished work from class that needs to be completed as homework and returned to school the next day. Third graders are expected to read and practice math facts at home. Math homework will be assigned throughout the week. Completing homework on time is an opportunity for students to learn good study habits.

Lunch

Third grade lunch time is at 11:30 with recess following. You may deposit money into your child’s account for daily lunches by sending money to school with your child. For your convenience paying for lunch can also be done on-line. You will be notified when the account reaches a low balance. Please put your child’s name on the bottom of the check or send money in an envelope marked with his/her name and the amount. If your child brings cold lunch, please have their name on the lunch box or sack.

Newsletters

Classroom news updates will be emailed out to you.

Parties

We will have a Fall and Valentine party. There will be more information later about these events. Please consider volunteering or donating to help with our parties.

iPads

Students will use an iPad throughout the day for educational purposes. We will be keeping them in the classroom and not be sending them home to ensure digital citizenship.

Phone Calls

Students will be allowed to use the phone for emergencies only. They will not be able to phone home for schoolwork, library books or cold lunches/snacks. Please assist students in developing the responsibility for remembering to bring all needed supplies to school each day. If students need to have a cell phone or smart watch at school, we ask they remain off during the school day and be kept in backpacks. If possible, we ask that all electronics be left at home.

Re-teaching/Interventions

Re-teaching is ongoing in third grade. Your child may be a part of a small re-teaching group throughout the year. There are many staff members/volunteers at Wheeler who lead re-teaching groups. In addition to re-teaching groups, there are intervention programs. Parents will be contacted if students begin a new intervention program or their intervention changes.

Planners

Starting in third grade your child will be using a daily planner. They will be filling out their notebook each day and marking assignments that are responsible for. If they didn’t finish the assignment at school, it should be finished at home that night. It will also keep you informed of any homework, upcoming tests, and events they have. It is my hope that the planner will enable you to see what your child has done in school, and have conversations with them about their day. Feel free to communicate with me in the assignment book. Please help your child remember to return the assignment notebook each day with a parent signature/initials.

School Supplies

Thank you for providing necessary supplies this fall. Many of the items brought to school, pencils, erasers, glue sticks, etc. will be collected and distributed as needed throughout the year. By doing this, we eliminate waste and do not have to ask for any other supplies as the year goes.

Snacks

Third graders do have an optional daily scheduled snack time. We encourage bringing a small healthy snack that can be eaten in 15 minutes. Again, this is voluntary and we will not be sharing snacks with other students. *Please avoid snacks with nuts.

Specials

Our PE/Music schedules are as follows.

Mon/Thur-PE Tues/Fri-Music

*Please bring/wear tennis shoes on PE days and Wednesdays.

*All classrooms will alternate PE/Music on Wednesdays and will need gym shoes.
