ACETS and the U of A

  • For In-State transfer credit course equivalency is determined through ATF meetings and departmental evaluators
  • Once submitted through ACETS it is then routed to the appropriate department for evaluation

  • UA is unique in that we also allow students to submit course equivalency request to ACETS directly for out of state work

  • This does not affect In State equivalencies, but is housed in ACETS and AZ Transfer as we use this for our Transfer Credit Guide

Credit Changes

  • Updates are underway for some courses and transferability here at UA
  • Courses that may have been transferable to a BASV may start to be non-transferable as the degrees are now housed within College of Information Sciences and College of Engineering
  • This does not affect the 75 unit block transfer for AAS to BASV
  • Students can appeal transferability with their academic advisor

Transferability vs Applicability of Credit

Courses are generally considered transferable from Arizona Community Colleges as long as they are level 100 and above and considered college level/intended for transfer to a 4 year degree program.

Exceptions:

    • Internships
    • Preceptorships
    • Independent Studies

The above exceptions can be petitioned to be transferable with a student's academic advisor.

UA tends to be stricter with Non-Transferable courses due to courses not being applicable to a degree here, or coming from a vocational training that is not intended to be used towards a 4 year program.

Transferability

Applicability

Though a course may be transferable, it may not be applicable to a degree program here at UA.

Example: A student could take multiple interior design courses, a degree not offered at UA, these courses will most likely transfer as departmental or university electives.

If the student chooses then to pursue an architecture degree, they would most likely have several courses that are either not applicable, or only applicable to GE/electives.

Therefore, it is recommended students begin to plan their transfer journey to UA as early as possible to reduce inapplicable coursework.

Why a Course May be Rejected

How Courses Transfer

  • Courses can sometimes be held up if they are routed to the incorrect department for evaluation.

  • If a course is an elective, and you would like it to go to a particular department, you can note it in the "Suggested/MAY be equivalent to" box.

  • Departmental and University electives are the same, one is not necessarily better than another.
    • For example, a chemistry course could be a CHEM 1/3TR or an ELCR 1/3TR. Both can be used in the degree program once determined by a student's advisor.

Departmental vs. University Electives

Evaluators

Evaluators can change year to year depending upon the department.

Each one evaluates differently, one may say it is a department elective, another a university.

Who can I Ask?

You can always contact the evaluator directly or ATF listserv.

You can also speak with Mary Ellen in TCE.

Direct equivalencies vs. Electives are not judgements on course quality, but rather applicability and correlation to exisiting UA coursework.

Updates to Courses

  • There are some non-active courses that will be pulled from the transfer credit rules, these will be announced to their respective ATFs.
  • New Civics Requirement:
    • POL 201 and HIST 150C3 already approved
    • More coming down the pipeline
    • Advisor discretion can be exercised on where to use this in the student's GE program
    • Please do not send us your courses for re-evaluation, we will be placing appropriate tags to corresponding transfer credit as courses are approved by our GE committee
