Purpose of the SHS Wellness Center

  • When class is not in session (before school starts, tutorial, lunches, post school), the Wellness Center is a relaxing and calming space with free snacks, hot chocolate or tea-play board games, draw, listen to music and be with their friends.
  • When class is in session, and a student needs mental health break, they are able to come to the Wellness Center for 20 minutes after obtaining a pass from their teachers. They are sent back to class after 20 minutes.
  • Students are also able to obtain therapy services at the Wellness Center. Each student has up to 12 therapy sessions free per the district. The referral can be made by students themselves, their peers and can also be made by parents and teachers.

Social Media- Data from SHS Seniors (Class of 2024)

Advice to 9th Grade Selves re: Social Media

  • Don't use social media to procrastinate what you need to get done. Use it after things are done.
  • Make sure to allot time for other activities and just to hang out with friends or do homework. Social media is fun but it takes away from the actual high school participation experience if you spend too much time online.
  • Don’t download Tik Tok or Snapchat; use Instagram or FB for school-related purposes as needed
  • Do not become fixated with what others are doing, simply do your best and continue pursuing your passions.
  • Don’t compare yourself to others, whether it be comparing your lifestyles, opportunities, relationships, academics, popularity, etc. The only person you truly need to compete with is yourself.

Best Practices for Teen Social Media Use

From: Dr. Michael Slone, PhD

  1. Screens/wifi off and out of bedroom by 10:00pm. Lights off by 10:30 or 11pm. Teens require at least 8 hours of sleep per night.
  2. Social media use is a privilege during free time and should not interfere with proper sleep, hygiene, nutrition, exercise, homework, chores, family time, or face-to-face interactions.
  3. Teach and monitor appropriate online behavior, including understanding the consequences of what you post or text.
  4. For help see Commonsensemedia.org or a Wellness Therapist

Strategies for Success

*Prioritize effort and a student-centered definition of success

*Focus conversations on learning and growing rather than strictly quantifiable measures

*View setbacks as growth opportunities (we can get bitter or we can get better)

*Parents- Avoid doing things for your student that he/she can do him/her/themself

*Avoid comparison and encourage your student to be his/her/their own best self

*Provide down time and time for sleep!
