The Training Request arrives.
And make it fun.
If you don’t know where you are going, how do you know when you get there?
Before you start running the race you have to find the starting line and know where the finish line is.
Lemme share the secret key to finding all of it.
It’s a black bag operation.
Look at your hand and repeat after me…
I keep six honest serving-men
(They taught me all I knew);
Their names are What and Why and When
And How and Where and Who.
Remember that.
Business Goal
This is NOT the training goal.
Why does it matter to the client?
STEP ONE: Start by defining the
Business Goal
Ask about the problem to get to the business goal.
Why does it matter to the client?
Business Goal
Ask how you will know if you meet the business goal.
Why does it matter to the client?
Business Goal
Define the problem in a single sentence.
If you cannot state it in a single sentence it is not clear enough to solve.
Why does it matter to the client?
Your Training Requests have arrived. Work with a partner to define the business goal for each in a single sentence.
This is the request.
Training Request vs Business Needs
The call center needs to be trained on the new software that lets them look up the answers to common questions.
The business needs to keep customer service at the same level to answer customer questions.
The warehouse staff needs training on operating the new forklifts.
The business needs to the warehouse to keep production at the same level with no accidents.
The fast food workers need training on the new POS system.
The business needs efficient and accurate orders to be taken to keep the customer lines moving.
The non-department employees need an overview of the business processes so they understand the context of the SOPs and can fulfill their roles in them.
The business needs all employees to understand the why of their job and how it fits into the overall functioning of the company
Training Request vs Business Needs
We need compliance training on information security.
The business needs to protect the network from viruses and attacks
My team needs business writing. Their writing is terrible.
The team needs professional, accurate written communication
The hospital staff needs training on handwashing.
The business needs to prevent the spread of germs
We need training on the new contract management system.
The business needs contracts to be systematically processed so nothing gets overlooked
Training Goal
In the end what should the learner KNOW and be able to DO?
STEP TWO: Define the
Training Goal
Business Goal
Works to meet
Training Goal
How will we know that they know and can do it?
There must be a way to show that they know and can do it.
Training Goal
It must be stated as a single sentence. This is the 50,000 foot view.
If you cannot state it in a single sentence the goal isn’t clear enough to start developing.
Example 1
Request:
The call center needs to be trained on the new software that lets them look up the answers to common questions.
Business Goal:
Maintain service levels in the call center.
Training Goal:
In the end, learners will know how to locate information in the software and be able to efficiently answer the most common customer questions to maintain service levels.
Problem:
New software may slow them down. They may not be able to keep up service levels.
Example 2
Problem:
Not all staff are washing their hands between patients and there has been cross contamination. Our internal infection rate is high.
Business Goal:
Prevent the spread of disease
Training Goal:
In the end all staff will remember to wash their hands at every transition between patients, and upon entering and leaving the examination rooms.
Request:
The staff need training on handwashing.
