Language Practice for skill development and real-life application, 2. Active learning engages students and helps them learn form each other, 3. Immediate feedback helps to refine learners’ language use, 4. Confidence building from regular practice is crucial for reducing anxiety and provides ample opportunities for positive reinforcement. And lastly, 5. Audio: This simple practice allows you to call on students in a random order and ensures equal talking opportunity for all. It can be used for all levels. Although, make sure you implement this practice in the first days of class. Your students will know that they can be called on at any point, which will enhance engagement with material. These are also a great way to pair or group students fairly. Remember: it is vital that you start this practice at the very beginning of your course. Trying to implement this in the middle or towards the end may confuse your students or even cause some resentment. If they aren’t used to being called on, then it can come as quite a shock and even cause embarrassment. And we definitely don’t want that.

Audio: This is an excellent activity for all levels for many reasons. One, the students do not have to create new information, so there is less cognitive demand. Two, they get to work with their peers which de facto builds community. Also, performing the dialogue is less stressful because they are not alone. Lastly, and probably most importantly, the students are learning real-life chucks of English that they can start using the minute they walk out of your classroom. And this is what the students truly want and need.

Audio: This is another fantastic activity that gets the whole class talking. Students are engaged with the target language, which is English in our case, and they get to practice a specific grammar point or language lesson repeatedly. Each student is given a card with a question. All of the question cards are different. For example, one card may be: “What’s your address?” another could be: “Tell me your telephone number.” Obviously, the questions would change depending on the level you are teaching, but I imagine you get the point. After the students get their cards, they then circulate around the room, asking each of their classmates the question on their card and then answering the questions that their peers ask them.

Audio: This is exactly what it sounds like. The teacher poses a question, topic, or prompt to the class. Students are asked to turn to a partner. If there is an odd number of students, groups of three can be formed. Students discuss the question or topic with their partner for a set amount of time, usually 2-5 minutes. This gives each student the opportunity to speak and listen. After the discussion, pairs can be asked to share their thoughts with the larger group. This can be done by selecting a few pairs to present or by having a more open sharing session. This activity build confidence, encourages active participation, and develops communication skills. This strategy would probably not be appropriate for your beginning level students, though, since their conversation skills are still quite limited.

Audio: Last, Student-led discussions are where students take the lead in discussing topics, guiding the conversation, and engaging with their peers. This method is for your more advanced students and encourages active participation, critical thinking, and the use of English in a more natural and spontaneous way. To conduct these - First, choose a topic and give your learners a bit of time to think about it. Then divide the class into small groups or pairs to ensure everyone has a chance to participate. Make sure to assign roles such as a discussion leader, note-taker, and timekeeper to ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to speak. After the discussion time is over, each group presents a summary of their discussion to the class.
