MY GRANDMOTHER

My grandmother’s name is José Fina, and she´s helped me to do this project.

She is a 68 year old woman and comes from a small town located near to the river Ebro called Escatrón.

Escatrón has around 1050 inhabitants, most of whom are currently grandparents. However, in the past, the number of inhabitants was much higher and there were many more young people.

School

My grandmother started going to school when she was seven years old, and left when she was only thirteen.

Although, she had to take care of her baby sister so she couldn't go to school every day.

But the days that she went, she spent about four hours at school, studying almost the same subjects every day. And something that surprised me was that they only had one book for all the classes.

My grandmother does not remember how many children there were in each class, but she does remember that some classes had many more students than others, being very unbalanced. In addition, there were more boys than girls in each class, since many of my grandmother's friends had to stay at home doing housework.

They also studied many fewer subjects than we study today.

Spanish, PE, religion, maths and values, a subject similar to geography. They didn't have any homework and they only had a few exams in the whole course.

Free time

In her free time she liked playing with her friends near the river where it was not so hot, or she would also go to the ledge of a small building to watch the sunset.

After meeting everyone in these places they used to play different games such as "La rayuela" or football. However, there were people who thought that playing soccer wasn't good for girls. They also used to go to the pool, since my grandmother's parents had a bar with one pool in it.

Since she had to help her parents in the bar and do the housework, she couldn't go out very often.

Although she didn't have a radio at home she did have a radio at the bar, that's why she liked to go there, because she could hear the news, something that was amazing by then.

On the other hand, my grandmother did not travel at all in her youth, since her parents could not afford it, so she spent her entire childhood in Escatrón

But, my grandmother didn't mind at alll. Every year, on February 5 they celebrated Santa Aguéda. It was a night in which a great bonfire was made in the center of the town and everyone ate blessed bread. When my grandmother tells me about this, I realize that she really liked it.
