PETROȘANI

  • Hunedoara cunty, located in the central-western part of Romania, bordered by the Carpathian Mountains
  • In the southern part of the county, where Transilvania, Banat and Ţara Românească meet, there is a region known as „The Jiu Valley”, geographically „The Petrosani Basin”, a region known for coal exploitation
  • The coal gave a new way of life to the valley and influenced both its history and its evolution
  • The valley is made of two smaller plateaus, on both Jiu rivers
  • The Valley is bordered by three chains of mountains; Retezat, Vâlcan and Parâng.

DEMOGRAPHY...

  • The town was colonized in the second half of the 19-th century when coal was discovered and boosted the town A lot of people from all over Romania and neighboring countries came and settled here.
  • The basic occupation of the villagers in the area, called “ Momarlani” remains agriculture, cultivating corn, potatoes and fruit trees. They also grow animals, especially sheep.
  • The houses are made from wood on ridges covered with tiles, pretty small and dark inside. They usually have two or three rooms.

TRADITIONS

  • The “measuring” of the sheep
  • Every year, around Constantine and Helena Holyday, the sheep are taken to the mountains by shepherds , marking the start of the spring. The shepherds then mark the sheep with specific color for each of them. The fresh milk is measured and depending on this, each shepherd gets a place in the sheepfold.

THE ROMANIAN CAROLERS

  • The singing visitors have a whole arsenal of flutes, flags with jingle bells and flowers. They leave in the morning from the church where from they get the blessing from the priest and visit every house to announce the Birth of Jesus

Arsenie Boca born September 29, 1910, Vața de Sus, Vața de Jos, Hunedoara, Romania - d. November 28, 1989, Sinaia, Prahova, Romania was a hieromonk, theologian and visual artist (muralist ) Romanian Orthodox, abbot of the Brâncoveanu Monastery from Sâmbăta de Sus and then of the Prislop Monastery, where, due to his personality, thousands and thousands of believers came, a fact for which he was harassed by the Securitate. He was one of the martyrs of the communist gulag, imprisoned at the Securitate in Brașov, taken to Canal, imprisoned in Jilava, Bucharest, Timișoara and Oradea. He painted the church in Drăgănescu ,as well as the Icon of the Mother of God with the Child from the altar of St. Eleftherius Church in Bucharest

The tomb of Father Arsenie from the Prislop Monastery is today one of the most important places of pilgrimage in the country, in recent years the number of pilgrims who came on November 28 being 30,000 - 40,000 people.

ION D. SÎRBU

Writer

He was born on June 28, 1919, in the town of Petrila,Hunedoara county, son of the miner Ion Sîrbu and Catherine Glaser. He went to primary school in Petrila and high school in Petroşani.He Graduated the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy from Cluj, refugee in Sibiu (1940-1945). He had as teachers Lucian Blaga, D. D. Roşca, Liviu Rusu,Onisifor Ghibu.

He passed away on September 17, 1989, at Craiova. In 1991, in his memory, the Theater of Petroşani receives the name of „I. D. Sîrbu ”. The 15th February 1996 he was posthumously awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Petrila.

THE MOMÂRLAN’S MUSEUM

  • The Momârlan’s museum, located on Slătinioara street,begins its story in two old fashioned houses built two centuries ago and in a generous yard.
  • In 2009, Mălinesc family decided to open a museum of the local population of Petrosani, the Momarlans. Here you can admire hundreds of traditional chlothing and other objects. These objects were donated by other momarlans from Slătinioara, Sălătruc, Dâlja Mare.
  • In present, the museum has about 200 costumes and 15000 artifacts

NATURAL HERITAGE

  • The Jiet Quays
  • The Jiet Quays, has a surface of 10 acres, the reservation being situated on Jieț river. The quays are crossed by DN 7A road Petroşani-Voineasa. The importance of this site is given by the beauty of the landscape and the cliffs of Parang mountains. It is one of the few regions in our country where there are caves ready to be discovered and hidden mountain paths.

THE BANITA QUAYS

The Banita Quays are short (250-300 m) formed by Bănița which has a limestone wall pretty tall and very narrow. The height of the walls is about 10-15 m. In many places the rock is above you, creating spectacular curves.

THE BOLII CAVE

  • There are two types of bats. The start of the cave is when Jupaneasa river enters the limestone through a spectacular portal 20 m at bottom and 10 m height. The main gallery is large, somewhere having huge chambers. Draining formations are present on the ceiling. For a length of 466 m the gallery drops just 3 m.
