INTRODUCTION TO CHARGE:

ELECTROSTATIC DEMONSTRATIONS

2 of 8

DEMONSTRATION PROCEDURE

Write and draw all observations

Sketch in appropriate force vectors

Sketch the distribution of charges within the elements

Explain!

DEMONSTRATION 1: STICKY TAPE

Tear off two equal sized pieces of tape

    • On one of pieces, fold the end down to create a square tab/handle (Tape A)
    • On the other, fold the corners down to create a pointy handle (Tape B)

Tear off

Bring the two pieces close to one another. Observe.

Bring

Place the square piece down on the table, place the pointy one directly on top. Rub together.

    • Peel them both off and now observe how they interact.

Place

With a partner, observe how two pointy (or two square) interact

Observe

DEMONSTRATION 2: BALLOON AND HOLE PUNCH

  • Blow up on balloon.
  • Rub on someones head to mess up their hair. (or pants works too)
  • Place balloon over hole punches.

What do you observe? Forces present?

- Challenge- Is the balloon positive or negative? The tapes?

CHARGED RODS

Positively charged rod-

Negatively charged rod-

How do they each interact with the paper?

What charge did the balloon have?
