Narrative Writing: “My Favorite Place to Play”
Sound and Taste: Turning experiences into descriptive writing.
Students are progressing quite well in their first narrative writing assignment. Students practiced an activity, making a thunderstorm, as a way of focusing on sound. As a group we made storm sound with our hands, legs and feet (while keeping our eyes closed). They then wrote with interest the sounds they would hear in their “Favorite Place To Play”. Additionally, students were asked to eat a Jelly Bean. However, half the beans were, well, let’s just say, AWFUL! After describing their experience using taste words, and lots of figurative language, students responded in writing about what they might taste and smell at their chosen place. We will wrap up this essay and continue on with personal narrative writing.
Reading
Students will be studying the Little Rock Nine, specifically Melba Pattillo Beals and her memoir of the first day of school “Warriors Don’t Cry”.
Skill: Informational Text Structure
Determining the structure of a text and the way in which it helps develop ideas is a difficult skill for students to master. This lesson plan for Warriors Don't Cry provides follow-up questions and useful enrichments to help teachers guide students toward a usable, repeatable method for uncovering structure in an information text.
Students are practicing utilizing the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.
Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind
"Begin with the End in Mind" encourages kids to think about what they want to achieve and how they want things to turn out before they even start a task or project. It means having a clear idea of what you want to become or achieve then identifying specific goals and objectives and developing a plan or strategy to reach those goals.
I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and make a difference. I am an important part of my classroom and contribute to my school's mission and vision. I look for ways to be a good citizen.
