What is a Chromebook?

​

• A chromebook is like a laptop but instead of Windows 10 or macOS, they run Google’s Chrome OS.
• These machines are designed to be used primarily while connected to the internet but they can also be used offline.
• Most applications and documents live in the cloud.
• The chrome browser is the portal to the internet
• Using Google Admin Apps can be blocked or pushed out to users

Effect on Student’s Learning

Advantages

• Chromebooks provide an additional portal for learning
• This learning is becoming invaluable for 21st Century learners
• Teachers can create multiple groups and activities within a classroom that can be working independently of the teacher
• Students can work collaboratively with others
• Students can refer to and use the feedback of both teachers and fellow students to improve their learning
• Students can choose to work at home on learning tasks if they choose to do so
• Work can be submitted at any time or anywhere

Student Engagement

Chromebooks facilitate learning. We have viewed the growth in independent learning. The students are engaged in their learning, and taking far more risks than they would in a non-device setting. The students can be set a task and asked to work it out for themselves.

It enhances problem solving skills. Many teachers have become the learners. There is a reciprocity of learning between the student and teacher. They collaborate and work to solve a task. Some examples are Sketchup and scratch activities. Chromebooks allow students to engage with other peers both near and far, within the classroom and with classroom on the other side of the world.

Year 5

• We are learning to be self managing and self directed learners in Year 5
• Chromebooks are an invaluable tool that we use to enhance and support the children’s learning
• We ensure that there is a balance between digital work and bookwork.
• Tasks are shared with students via Google Drive or email
• They have options to collaborate on tasks or work independently
• Students can interact with peers, teachers, parents, and other students around New Zealand
• Our goal is to ensure that our learners have to opportunity to become digitally capable individuals (NZ Digital Curriculum)

How are Chromebooks used as part of the classroom

Programme in Year 6?

• The Year Six team have used the Chromebooks for learning across the curriculum, they also dovetail nicely with the key competencies students need in today’s world. The New Zealand Curriculum identifies five key competencies: thinking, relating to others, using language, symbols and texts, managing self and participating and contributing.
• Reading: has created avenues for reading and responding to texts

Writing: has facilitated writing, collaboration, sharing, and publishing

• Maths: the use of maths sites such as Maths week, Study Ladder, Sumdog and maths videos
• Topic: research and presentations around topic areas

Differentiation

Chromebooks allow for a greater range of student learning and activities. This differentiation can enhance the learning of both gifted and remedial students.

Remedial students in particular can remain far more focused with a Chromebook, and benefit from the hands-on nature of a device. This is especially true of boys.

Google Classroom (demo)

Google Classroom is a blended learning platform developed by Google for schools and provides for the creating, distributing, sharing, marking and feedback of student work in a collaborative paperless way.

This programme has a huge capacity to enhance learning.

Students are invited to the classroom by the teacher.

The students can create and submit work in several formats, they can share documents, and contribute and respond to other students. Teachers can monitor the progress of each student and provide additional assistance or commentary for any work. Teachers can communicate with the class or individual students, and create class announcements.
