Thomas More’s �Dual-Credit (TMDC) �Program

What is Thomas More’s Dual-Credit Program?

  • Offers eligible high school students the opportunity to take college classes for dual credit at a reduced tuition rate.
    • The current tuition rate is $91/credit hour for 2022-23 - $273 for a three-credit course.
  • Open to public school, private school, and home school students with the approval of their high school.
  • Students will have the ability to take classes at their high school (for KY high schools), online, and at our campus in Crestview Hills. 
    • Students from Indiana or Ohio schools are more than welcome to take a class online or on our campus.
    • Students can take any course in our catalog as long as they meet the pre-requisites for that course.
  • Classes taught by Thomas More faculty or credentialed high school instructors.

What does the program look like?

  • Our program is growing rapidly.
    • We have partnerships with over 24 high schools in the region.
      • We also have more than 26 high school faculty teaching in the TMDC program.
    • Last year (2021-22) we had an unduplicated headcount of 495 students taking a total of 2655 credit hours.
      • This year (2022-23), we are on track to surpass that with an estimated unduplicated headcount of 547 taking an estimated total of 2839 credit hours.
    • Most of our students are enrolled in a course at their high school, while a smaller percentage take courses online or on-campus.
  • On average, 96% (or higher) of our students earn C or better in their course(s).
    • Fall semester (2021): 57.5% A’s, 27.7% B’s, and 11.1% C’s
    • Spring semester (2022): 67.3% A’s, 23.7% B’s, and 6.2% C’s

Thomas More Dual-Credit (TMDC) Pathways

  • TMDC Pathways allow students to explore majors or get a jumpstart on that degree at Thomas More. ​
  • A pathway generally contains a sequence of 4 or 5 courses for a student to take to earn up to a semester's worth of credit toward that degree at Thomas More.
  • Courses in each pathway are taught either online or on-campus.

Eligibility

  • To qualify for Thomas More’s Dual-Credit Program:
    • Students must be juniors or seniors
      • A sophomore is eligible to take dual-credit classes if:
        • A) it is approved by their high school, and
        • B) the course is offered at their high school*.
          • *In select cases, sophomores may be permitted to take an online/campus course.
    • Students must have an unweighted high school GPA of 3.0+
    • Students must meet any course pre-requisites
      • For example: Science and math courses typically have an ACT prerequisite.
  • To continue in Thomas More’s Dual-Credit Program:
    • Students must maintain a 2.0 TMU GPA each semester.

Applying to the Dual-Credit Program (Students)

  • Students who are applying to Thomas More’s Dual-Credit Program will need to complete:
    • An online application
  • High school counselors will provide a copy of the high school transcript, any ACT scores, and the student’s course selection(s).
  • Please note:
    • Returning students do not need to reapply.
    • Schools may set their own additional guidelines.

Supporting our TMDC Students

  • TMDC students are Thomas More students:
    • Students have access to the same resources: Canvas, library, free tutoring, campus events, free printing and free parking
  • Students who are struggling in their classes have support:
    • Professors during their office hours or other designated times
    • Tutoring, Math/Physics Tutoring, and the Writing Center
    • Office of Student Accessibility
    • Students are enrolled in a mandatory dual-credit Canvas orientation that covers being a Thomas More student and how to be successful in the program
    • Advocates:
      • High school counselor
      • TMDC team

Applying to the Dual-Credit Program �(KY High School Faculty)

  • Faculty who are applying to teach in the TMDC program at a Kentucky high school will need to complete: 
    • A credentialing application 
      • This will include unofficial transcripts and a resume
  • Process at a glance:
      • Step 1: Complete and submit the application
      • Step 2: Department evaluates application, and the result is shared with the applicant and their school
      • Step 3: “Hiring Process” with the Provost’s Office
      • Step 4: Preparation with academic department / Orientation

Supporting our Credentialed Faculty

  • TMDC faculty are eligible for a free class each semester they teach​.
  • New faculty will have a faculty liaison within their Thomas More academic department that will assist them in creating their course during their first year.
  • Faculty are enrolled in a mandatory dual-credit Canvas orientation that covers teaching this unique population.
    • A follow up professional development event is later held to highlight resources and foster collaboration amongst our TMDC faculty.
      • For 2023-24, this event will be held on August 3, 2023.

Previewing AY 2023-24

  • Current partners: please review the Schedule of DC courses at your high school and provide changes/feedback by February 15.​
  • If you have a high school instructor interested in having their credentials evaluated to teach a TMDC course, please have those applications submitted by March 1. ​
  • Planning ahead for new and returning students:​
    • Parent nights – schedule with me between January and March​
      • Diocese of Covington Schools Parent Night (with NKU & GCTC) on February 23 at 6p in the Saints Center
    • Student applications – begin submitting on/after March 15​
    • Student registration – begins around April 1​
    • Final fall application deadline – est. August 9
      • Fall 2023 semester begins August 14
