Infrastructure

It is a common misconception that hydrogen fuel costs will be a barrier to aviation uptake when it is in fact likely to be a key selling point in comparison to SAF. Green hydrogen - which is made using only renewable energy and water - can have a cost today as low as $3 per kg which is equivalent to $1.50 per gallon of jet fuel. For smaller operators in sub-regional and regional sectors, this already represents a cost saving. We calculate rapidly falling green hydrogen prices with $2.2/kg in the near term, and major governments, including the U.S., targeting $1/kg by the end of the decade.

And that all sounds great on paper, but how do we also make this a reality. We need to have refuelling infrastructure understood and underway by the time our engines are being installed into the airframes I just mentioned.

Part of that is advancing our HARE system as part of our HyFlyer II programme. Here you can see the refuelling truck we developed initially under HyFlyer I at Cranfield, now refuelling our Dornier aircraft at our new home at Cotswold Airport. This refuelling was for the fuel cell commissioning earlier this year.

To produce the hydrogen for the refuelling, we are currently using grid electricity to power our onsite electrolyser, but later this year the circle will be completed with solar PV added to the roof of our hangar, enabling green hydrogen production sufficient for our test purposes.

ZeroAvia has developed detailed operational plans with first mover airports to ensure seamless, cost-effective provision of low-carbon hydrogen fuel at airport sites. Each airport environment has unique needs. There are three basic pathways to provision of H2 in most use cases:

Full end-to-end generation - on-site renewable energy to power H2 electrolyzers and enable on-site green hydrogen production, coupled to refueling ecosystem of hydrogen pipelines and/or refueling bowsers
On-site H2 production using nearby renewables/low-carbon energy to produce green hydrogen on-site, coupled to refueling ecosystem of hydrogen pipelines and/or refueling bowsers
Centralized H2 Production and Storage - road transportation to airport sites, distribution via refueling ecosystem of hydrogen pipelines and/or refueling bowsers

Developing these pathways can’t just be done in theory, and we are committed to develop the theory and ut the steel in the ground…
