Why climate action is needed
* We are experiencing direct impacts of climate change now
* Scientists expect these impacts will continue to increase and affirm that climate change poses significant threats to California communities and residents
14
Key terms
* Climate change: refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns caused by greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions- e.g., carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) that trap the sun’s heat
* Mitigation: mitigating/reducing the impacts of climate change by reducing emissions of GHGs or through removal of GHG from our atmosphere and by implementing climate smart actions
e.g., composting, switching to EVs
* Adaptation: adjusting to current and future effects of climate change e.g., building levees, drought-tolerant landscaping
