Visibility

The most important thing is to be visible in the strike. Your PI/supervisor may ask for reporting purposes both to the administration as well as potentially for effort-reporting purposes, say yes, you’re on strike! You should also withhold your paid labor. We recommend withholding 20 hours (you are only paid for up to 20 hours of your work), but you choose how much to withhold (we are not tracking the amount of time withheld).

It’s important we are visible together as we picket and march. You can and should combine your time striking with your time picketing. You should work with department leaders to come up with additional plans to be visible in the department/building.

What does Labor Stoppage Actually Look Like?

We do not recommend striking from the following duties:

Any research that progresses your dissertation work. You should not stall personal gains to research.

Feeding or maintaining the health of live subjects.

Securing deliveries or transportation of live subjects.

Running experiments that clearly have a greater impact on the advancement of your personal research than that of your supervisor or lab.

Strikes are powerful because they are coordinated, collective actions. Researchers who are striking can maximize their strike impact by organizing their labs, floors, and peers!
