What is Narration?
The act of reporting the words of a speaker is called Narration. There are two types to report what a person has said:
Speech
Direct
Indirect
Direct Speech
Arun said,โ I shall go to market todayโ.
Indirect Speech
Arun said that he would go to market that day.
Rules:
When direct speech is converted to indirect speech
certain types of changes take place:
For Example:
Ram said โI buy a football.โ
Ram said that he bought a football.

For Example:
I said to Neelam โYou will win the match.โ
I told Neelam that she would win the
match.
Rules (Cont.):
For Example:
Ritu said to Harsh โThe little girl is a very good
singer.โ
Ritu told Harsh that the little girl was a very
good singer.
CHANGES OF TENSES
Direct: He said, โ I love to play badminton.โ
Indirect: he said that he loved to play badminton.
Direct : Geeta said, โ I am running.โ
Indirect: Geeta said that she was running.

Direct: Rahul said, โ I have done my work.โ
Indirect: Rahul said that he had done his work.
Direct: The boy said, โ I have been doing painting since afternoon.โ
Indirect: The boy said that he had been doing painting since afternoon.

Direct: Anita said, โ Swati sang a song.โ
Indirect: Anita said that Swati had sang a song.
Direct: The doctor said to the mother , โ your child was suffering from fever.โ
Indirect: The doctor said to the mother that her child had been suffering from fever.

Direct: The Teacher said, โ The earth revolves around
the sun.โ
Indirect: The Teacher said that The earth revolves
around the sun.
Direct: The Teacher said, โ India got independence in
1947.โ
InDirect: The teacher said that India got independence
in 1947.
EXAMPLES:
Direct: Arvind said to me, โI play football everyday.โ
Indirect: Arvind told me he plays football everyday.
Direct: The girl said, โShe was singing and she was
dancing.โ
InDirect: The girl said that she was singing and she
was dancing.
