What can a comment look like?

These people got really into it and engaged in a conversation. Put some thought into your comments and try for 2 sentences at least!

See the next slide for an example. You can comment on that one as well if you would like.

Participant 1: (teacher sample)

I think it’s okay and important to stand up against authority when authority is enforcing unfair policies. It can be scary and dangerous, so it’s important to be careful about how you go about it.

For example, there are many things that happen in schools that are unfair. As a teacher, I sometimes feel like I’m in a weird position when I’m told to enforce rules that don’t make sense to me: like when a kid is removed from a classroom for wearing a hoodie. I have both enforced this rule and defied this rule, but haven’t actively pushed back on it until recently. I think it’s okay to defy authority when authority doesn’t make sense and when you have people to support you.

Participant 2: Student a (they would type name here)

This one time in middle school a teacher tried to stop me from speaking out about a topic that he wasn't portraying correctly and when i tried to correct him he would sometimes try to silence me.this annoyed me cause he was giving wrong information to the class and everyone agreed with him.this just made me do more research on topic people might get incorrect and to get the word out to others.

I think it's only okay to defy someone in power when, what they are doing is incorrect, like them giving false information and or abusing their power in a way that can affect us in a bad way.

Participant 3: student b (they would type name here)

I think it’s important for people to follow the rules. Why?

Explain→

Because if people don't follow the rules then life would be ruined without rules that people won't follow.

What happens if the rules are unfair?

→ If the rules are unfair, people should ask for help from their peers.

If the rules aren't fair to one person then that person is gonna feel bad and try and ask for help to their friends.

I don’t believe that there is a specific reason to defy authority. When you look back in history there is an extraordinary amount of reasons as to why someone would defy authority . It is based off of opinion and could only be justified if the authority is corrupt or if the amount of supporters are at large. In my opinion I would deliberately go against authority if their best interest isn’t with the value of its people or breaks the law themselves. Sort of like whats happening right now; Our justice system and government is based off of white supremacy, it would be easy to rebuttal that I am just making things up but the truth is i’m not. Anyone who opens their eyes and heart to change and to be open minded will be the ones to make change; to truly make the world great. You can’t teach someone who doesn’t want to be taught. Id also like for it to be know that i have no problem with the color of skin someone is born into, what they believe or things they’re into. If whatever they’re doing doesn't impact me personally than what business do I have to judge them?

I think going against authority or people in power is a difficult topic considering it mainly depends on opinion. Majority of people in our school background dislike Donald trump and even though that's true, There is still people who support him. For example, to me, he's corrupt, but to others he is a savior. This is why i say there's no correct reason to go against power, Considering someone who you believe in, could seem corrupt to another.
