Design is many things:

  • Design is the best use of tools, machines, materials, and processes to create a solution to a problem.

  • Design connects a person to his/her environment.

  • Your whole day involves design.

Good design follows a set of given or identified guidelines also known as criteria and constraints:

Defining the Problem

Typically includes developing a specific problem statement that identifies the what, who, when, and how the problem should be addressed.

  • What is the real problem that requires a solution?
  • What are the goals and objectives in solving the problem?
  • Who or what does the problem affect or impact?
  • Identify shortcomings and other issues.

Example of Defining the Problem: Why do kids need to be strapped in car seats?�

Let’s try it, we know kids need to be in car seat, but what is the real problem. Can we fix it? Is the car seat the ultimate fix or can we find a better one?

Do we have a better understanding now of the problem? Can we begin to design a process to solve it?

Brainstorming Solutions

Typically includes brainstorming solutions and evaluating all ideas to determine the best possible solution.

  • Brainstorm as many possible solutions to the problem as you can generate.
  • Revisit the criteria and constraints for the problem.
  • Evaluate and analyze your solutions.
  • Select the best solution and formulate a plan for development.

Taking Your Brainstorming Further

If you're not getting enough good quality ideas, try using the approaches below to increase the number of ideas that you generate:

  • The Stepladder Technique – This improves the contribution of quieter group members by introducing one person at a time.
  • Brainwriting – This is a written approach that you can use to encourage all individuals to generate and develop ideas.
  • Online Brainstorming (also known as Brain-netting) – An electronic method of brainstorming, this uses a document stored on a central server, or on a Cloud-based system.
  • Crawford's Slip Writing Approach – You can use this approach to get plenty of ideas from all participants, and to get a view of each idea's popularity.

These techniques help you in specific situations:

  • Reverse Brainstorming – This is used to improve a product or service.
  • Starbursting – Starbursting helps you develop questions that you need to ask to evaluate a proposal.
  • Charette Procedure – This helps you brainstorm with large groups of people. (Conventional brainstorming becomes increasingly ineffective when more than 10 or 12 people are involved.)
  • Round-Robin Brainstorming – You can use this approach to get people to contribute ideas without being influenced by others.
  • Rolestorming – This technique encourages group members to take on other people's identities while brainstorming, thereby reducing their inhibitions.

Exploring Solutions

Typically includes researching the problem and identifying technology that could be used to resolve the problem.

  • How was the problem or a similar problem addressed in the past?
  • What are the criteria and constraints for this problem?
  • What current technologies are available that could be used to solve the problem?
  • What are potential impacts of the solution?

Generate a Solution

Typically includes, “bringing your solution to life.”

Synthesize your design into a tangible, working product by developing models or prototypes.

A prototype (an early approximation of a final system or product) is built, tested, and then reworked as necessary until an acceptable prototype is finally achieved.

Testing and Evaluation

Typically includes testing and evaluating your project against the problem statement as well as the criteria and constraints.

  • Does the solution solve the problem?
  • What went right or wrong? And, how can the process be improved?
  • Did the solution cause another problem?
  • Does the solution have another use?

Redefining the Problem

After a solution has been tested and evaluated, the process can be repeated to solve unintended problems or to enhance the current solution.

The Engineering Design �Process is an iterative �method that people use �to solve problems.
