 Engineering Design Process
Day 2
Let's Look at what an engineer is: Intro to Engineering
Type 2 things you know about how the Engineering Design Process helps Generation Z learn job skills.
What is Design
Design is many things:
How can WHS use the design principles to help students learn job skills for the future?
What Influences Design
A good design is finding the best solution to a problem.
Good design follows a set of given or identified guidelines also known as criteria and constraints:
Who is a Designer
YOU are a designer whether you know it or not!
What is NOT Designed
The Natural Environment
Anything man-made that has been designed!
What Process Do People use to Design
The Engineering Design Process is an on-going or iterative method that people use to solve problems.
The SIMPLE Engineering Design Process
Defining the Problem
Typically includes developing a specific problem statement that identifies the what, who, when, and how the problem should be addressed.
Example of Defining the Problem: Why do kids need to be strapped in car seats?
Let’s try it, we know kids need to be in car seat, but what is the real problem. Can we fix it? Is the car seat the ultimate fix or can we find a better one?
Do we have a better understanding now of the problem? Can we begin to design a process to solve it?
Brainstorming Solutions
Typically includes brainstorming solutions and evaluating all ideas to determine the best possible solution.
Professionals and Students are collaborating more than ever. Here are a few tools
If you don’t know how to share in google docs here is a video that explains how. If you are not using it, you are missing out on easy, real time collaboration. Sharing & Collaborating
Taking Your Brainstorming Further
If you're not getting enough good quality ideas, try using the approaches below to increase the number of ideas that you generate:
These techniques help you in specific situations:

Exploring Solutions
Typically includes researching the problem and identifying technology that could be used to resolve the problem.
Generate a Solution
Typically includes, “bringing your solution to life.”
Synthesize your design into a tangible, working product by developing models or prototypes.
A prototype (an early approximation of a final system or product) is built, tested, and then reworked as necessary until an acceptable prototype is finally achieved.

Testing and Evaluation
Typically includes testing and evaluating your project against the problem statement as well as the criteria and constraints.
Redefining the Problem
After a solution has been tested and evaluated, the process can be repeated to solve unintended problems or to enhance the current solution.
The Engineering Design Process is an iterative method that people use to solve problems.
IT NEVER REALLY ENDS!!!!
Explain a time when you used the Engineering Design Process
Explain your example of using the Engineering Design Process:
In one minute, write the most important thing from today’s lesson.
Pretend your friend was absent from class today…Write what you would say if you had to explain the lesson to your friend.
