Objective: Use this activity in a Chapter meeting, it helps highlight the power of positivity and enthusiasm in Chapter meetings and helps engagement and the feeling of community within your chapter.

  • Prep - 10 minutes
  • Length of a normal Chapter meeting!

Instructions:

  • Overview: Prior to a meeting, a leader secretly gives some members a role to play, all to make the meeting a more positive experience than what it might be otherwise.
  • Supplies: Meeting role descriptions to cut out and distribute to those “in” on it.
  • Individually ask the meddlers if they are willing to help and assign them their role.
  • Let them know they they should not share this with anyone.
  • During the meeting, give positive praise and reinforcement to the meddlers, as appropriate, but do not let on there is a conspiracy under way!
  • At the end of the meeting, ask all participants if they felt that anything was more different than usual. After a few answers, then let everyone know that you had previously conspired with a few individuals to make the meeting a bit more upbeat.
  • Point out that although some information was contrived, this did not make the meeting any less effective or undermine the purpose of the meeting.

Discussion:

  • How did the positive reinforcement change the the meeting? Was it a better experience for volunteers?
  • Was the meeting more or less productive? Or did it change at all?
  • How can we continue to implement positivity and enthusiasm in our meetings - brainstorm and implement!

Your role during the meeting: At least twice during the meeting, praise someone (for offering an idea, for being well-spoken, etc.)

Your role during the meeting: Use only positive verbs. Avoid such words as cant and wont. Instead, phrase things positively (can, will, etc.)

Your role during the meeting: Be an enthusiastic cheerleader. Find opportunities to make empathetic statements such as “WE can do that!” or “That would be great!”

Your role during the meeting: Every time someone looks at you, smile

Your role during the meeting: Bring an unexpected treat- cookies, chocolates, fruit, or the like.

Your role during the meeting: Before the meeting, without being seen, clean and tidy the meeting room and help make it look fresh such as putting flowers in a central location
