Aim

  • To digitised newspapers from the Early South African Black Press (using Switzer’s bibliography) so that they are searchable and available via open access platforms.
  • To use these texts to develop a journalism and society curriculum that is grounded in decoloniality, transdisciplinarity and interinstitutional
  • The digital archive will be open access, interactive and have accessible meta-data

A multiplatform multilingual digital archive

  • Some of the existing digital humanities platforms foreground the digital aspect at the expense of the humanities, hence a multiplatform approach is my go-to route currently.
  • To work with a humanities archive, an interdisciplinary, interinstitutional approach is optimal
  • There may be duplications because people are work in silos
  • Working with multilingual archives in digital spaces presents opportunities and limitations
