The Rules

  • In high school we are only going to concentrate on the referencing aspects of APA e.g. reference and in-text citations.
  • You should be aware that the APA Publication Manual is a whopping 265 pages and covers all aspects of writing: margins, font, headings, organization, style abbreviations, etc.
  • Depending on where you are gathering your information from (e.g. blog posts, websites, published books, databases, youtube, etc.), there is a standard way of citing each type of source.

Citing an Interview:

APA reference lists only include works that can be found by the reader. As a personal interview is not published or “findable,” it should not be included in an APA reference list. Instead, a personal interview should be referenced as a parenthetical citation.

For example:

In-text Citations & Direct Quotation of Source

What is a direct quotation of a source?

This is when you essentially copy and paste another author's writing into your paper, due to the fact that this author’s words support your ideas and paraphrasing the information would reduce the impact of the statement.

The APA Manual states that the “reproducing word for word material directly from another author’s work” (2010, p. 170) is a direct quotation.

NOTE: You give credit to the source by citing the (author, date, page or paragraph number) at the end of the sentence, before the period.

In-text Citations & Paraphrasing

What is paraphrasing?

Paraphrasing is a restatement of someone else’s ideas - but in your own words. When you use someone else’s ideas or information that is not common knowledge, you must give credit to the source of that idea or information.

e.g.

Good paraphrasing can allow the use of quality sources to support your ideas and allow the ideas to match your writing style (Plagiarism.org, 2014, para 4).

NOTE: You give credit to the source by citing the (author, date, page or para) at the end of the sentence, before the period.
