So how do we learn this sensibility if it’s not about obediently following rules?

There are so many ways to learn this. I learned in a classroom by reading books about the history of design, and theories of technology, critiquing projects, building my own projects with teams and having them utterly shredded by panels of elite people who entirely disagreed with each other about why my project was good and bad. Today I’m going to present an emersion into design thinking that emphasizes the value I think design thinking offers in a world where the scientific method and agile software development already have a strong and meaningful presence in shaping the process of turning an idea to a creation.

I’d like to spend some time going through other fields that resemble design thinking so you have an ability to compare how they all are similar but unique.

So what does design thinking look like? Here’s a well loved diagram of the design process. Does this feel familiar? In my experience the design thinking process isn’t different from anything else we do in life. Design thinking just does a better job of encouraging the process, moving it along, understanding when it’s going well and when it’s not going well, and being able to guide others through difficulty. Nobody wants their work or their life to look like a scribble. We love straight lines, they’re so much more appealing. They inspire confidence and make us feel relaxed and in control. The problem is, the line never starts straight, no matter how much we wish it would. As you grow to be more experienced as a design thinker you’ll start to have a longing for the scribble phase, because that’s where you can say yes to different thoughts.

There’s one pretty advanced feature of design thinking that I like to emphasize for my clients, but typically they’re resistant to the idea. I’ll share it with you anyway in hopes that I inspire you to think in systems. See in the previous slide the labels at the end are problem and solution? We love to think of our ideas as solutions that solve a problem. It makes us look so smart and powerful. The trouble is, no problems are isolated. When we point at something and call it a problem, we’re artificially isolating it from its context. When we build a solution for the artificially isolated problem, we’re submitting a change into a whole system of related issues. .When we build or create someting, we’re influencing all the problems that are adjacent to the one we want to work on. Furthermore, what we think of as a problem worth solving might not be important to other people. When we talk about solutions, that word also suggests that a solution is complete. All creations exist in a complex world, and the finality of the word solution is just as artificial as our isolation of a problem. If you start talking about your designs as interventions that you make in response to issues, it frees you to work in the real world which is full of interconnected issues. Alternatively, you could look at an opportunity that seems to be underdeveloped, and develop an idea that inspires in others a longing for a response to that opportunity.

Tacit insights that you already know, that your team already knows, is a rich and readily available way to start thinking about an idea.

Here is an incomplete but long list of other ways to go about getting more information to inform your creative work.

Some of you will never feel satisfied with the amount of research you’ve completed. You’ll always think of that one interview subject you’d like to have access to, or that one test you’d like to run, before you move on. Others may be inclined to think only of the information they already know, and forget to wonder how someone else might think of an idea or context differently. Start with your own tacit insights, listen to the insights of others on your team, and invite in diversity when you don’t have it built in. Then arrive at a consensus with your team on how much information you have to pack for your trip.

What’s the difference?

The difference is the curiosity you have about others, and the confidence you have in your own idea.

If you really don’t know what to make, or how people will respond to what you’re making, make objects that deliver insights about your context

If you really think you know what you want to make, and the idea is clear in your mind, but you still want to know how people will respond to it so you can improve on the idea, you make a prototype.

Either way, make with what you have. Start low res and work your way up to high res the more you learn and build confidence in your idea.

Your clients will appreciate how fast you learn, how cheap this validation process is, and how quickly you can turn ideas into testable objects or experiences.

Be prepared for this because it takes practice, bravery, and a charisma for talking to strangers who may not want to talk to you.

But there are so many people out there. And you’re not trying to work on every problem for every person.

You’re working on one project. So identify who you think should influence your project.

Look at your table, are there folks who aren’t represented at the table?

Who are the essential voices that should shape your work?

Start by drawing or modeling your persona, then answering some questions about who they are and what they want. Typically this process happens with a ton of research. What we’re hoping to drive you toward is understanding people and what they want, not how they feel about products. In this moment you’re more like a film maker, or an anthropologist than you are a business professional.

Consider age, gender, religion, education, income, family, physical ability, language, or anything else that shapes the way a person thinks, feels, behaves or experiences the world.
