Mathematics - Measurement
Task 1
How big is New Zealand? (What are the ways you can use to state the size of a country?)
In what ways has New Zealand grown over the last 160 years? (You may need to think creatively to answer this question well).
Mathematics - Success Criteria - Task 1
Measurement:
How big is New Zealand?
In what ways has New Zealand grown over the last 160 years?
Achieved: Statements made about the physical size of NZ and/or other measures such as population, GDP. An accurate statement made on growth made for any measure given (e.g. physical size - approximately zero growth).
Merit: Statements made about the physical size of NZ and other measures such as population, GDP. An accurate statement made on growth made for all measures given (e.g. physical size - approximately zero growth).
Excellence: Statements made about the physical size of NZ and other measures such as population, GDP. An accurate statement made on growth made for all measures given (e.g. physical size - approximately zero growth). All statistics presented in tabular form with beginning stat, ending stat and changes (absolute and percentage).
Mathematics - Measurement
Task 2
Create a timeline of significant events in New Zealand.
As a part of the timeline include information on people who have contributed. You may do this task in pairs.
Mathematics Task 2 example
Examples of how timelines can be presented
Examples of how timelines can be presented
Mathematics - Success Criteria - Task 2
Create a timeline of significant events in New Zealand. As a part of the timeline include information on people who have contributed.
Achieved: A timeline presented that goes from pre-European Maori through to the present. Key events listed (Maori arrival, Tasman, Cook, Waitangi, WWs, etc). Some key people mentioned.
Merit: A detailed timeline well-presented that goes from pre-European Maori through to the present. Key events listed (Maori arrival, Tasman, Cook, Waitangi, WWs, etc). Some key people mentioned.
Excellence: A detailed timeline well-presented that goes from pre-European Maori through to the present. Key events listed (Maori arrival, Tasman, Cook, Waitangi, WWs, etc). Key people associated with each date mentioned and some details given (e.g. born ????, died ????)
Mathematics - Algebra / Statistics
Task 3
Algebra & Statistics Define the term “net immigration” and explain how it is worked out for New Zealand.
Use a graph to show what has happened with net immigration in New Zealand in recent years.
Mathematics - Algebra / Statistics
Define the term “net immigration” and explain how it is worked out for NZ. Use a graph to show what has happened with net immigration in NZ in recent years.
Achieved: Net immigration defined as the number of permanent entrants to a country minus those leaving long term. A graph presented of these statistics that covers the last 5 years (at least).
Merit: Net immigration defined as the number of permanent entrants to a country minus those leaving long term. Reasons given for movement. A graph well presented of these statistics that covers the last 5 years (at least) and a comment made on any trends.
Excellence: Net immigration defined as the number of permanent entrants to a country minus those leaving long term. Detailed reasons given for movement. A graph well presented of these statistics that covers the last 10 years (at least) and a comment made on any trends and future expectations.
Mathematics - Statistics
Task 4
Create a questionnaire to profile the students of your class. A key idea to make use of here is that of using “closed” questions. It would be good to try your questionnaire out on Room 7 students and summarise the information.
Mathematics - Success Criteria - Task 4
Create a questionnaire to profile the students of GBS. You may like to try your questionnaire out on 5 of the school’s students.
Achieved: A questionnaire presented that would gather information on a student while not being too invasive.
Merit: A questionnaire presented that would gather information on a person while not being too invasive. It would cover a range of areas. Closed questions primarily used.
Excellence: A questionnaire presented that would gather information on a person while not being too invasive. It would cover a definitive range of areas. Closed questions primarily used and the survey tested to establish its effectiveness.
Mathematics - Skills developed & shown
By the end of the project you should be able to show that you can do the following:
