KWL: Know, Wonder, Learn Graphic Organizer

All Subjects, Grades 3-12

Assignment Objectives

  • Students reflect and engage with a concept before, during, and after a learning activity.
  • Students work with a Paper Live Help tutor to get feedback on their ability to explain what they learned.

Teacher Instructions

  • Before teaching a concept, give students the worksheet and the topic or concept you will be teaching them about. Ask them to complete “What do I know?” with any prior knowledge they have about the topic.
  • As you complete the learning activity (examples include a reading, video, or lecture) students write questions they have in “What do I Wonder”
  • When the activity is done, students summarize what they learned in the “What did I learn” box.
  • Step 2 of the worksheet has students log onto Paper to get feedback from a tutor.

Ideas for Use

  • Pair with a reading, video, lecture, or lesson to help students reflect throughout the learning process.
  • Use this as part of an intro activity at the start of a lesson or unit.
  • Extend this activity by having students write a paragraph or essay based on the graphic organizer.

Step 2: When the chart above is done, log on to Paper to chat with a tutor. If you have any questions under “What do I wonder?” share them with the tutor for additional help. When done asking questions, share what you wrote under “What did I learn?” and take notes on any feedback you receive.
