Course Description

English III is the study of reading, writing, listening, and research skills with a focus on American Literature. The NC Standard Course of study promotes project-based learning and facilitates in-depth study of the material with more rigor.

Classroom Grading Policy

Students will be graded on class assignments, homework, projects, writing assignments, tests, and quizzes. Each student will be expected to complete all assignments in a timely manner. Pop quizzes will be given periodically on reading required outside of class. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED! If you are absent, you have 3 days after your absence to make up work. Do not abuse this privilege.

1st 9 Weeks Grading Period

  • The study of rhetoric (ethos, logos, and pathos) through the analysis of U.S. historical documents
  • Resume writing
  • The Crucible by Arthur Miller

2nd 9 Weeks Grading Period

  • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
  • UNwind by Neal Shusterman

Tests: 60% of your final average

Quizzes: 20% of your final average

Homework assignments: 20% of your final average

Gaston County Schools Grading Policy

IF YOU DO NOT MEET GASTON COUNTY SCHOOLS EXAM EXEMPTION REQUIREMENTS, you will be required to take a teacher-made exam at the end of the semester that will count 25% of your final grade in this course.

Also, students who have earned the minimum number of credits to be classified a junior will be required to take the ACT in the spring semester. We will be preparing for this test throughout the course.

  • WIRELESS COMMUNICATION DEVICES IN CLASS: To utilize and maximize instructional time in classes, cell phones, tablets, or smart watches are not allowed to be used during class by students unless directed by the teacher for instruction. Devices need to be out of sight throughout the entire class period as directed by teachers. Students are allowed to use their cell phones during class changes and their assigned lunch period. Failure to comply with the teachers’ and school policy will result in consequences.

  • WIRELESS COMMUNICATION DEVICES VIOLATION
    • 1st offense: Cell phone/device is confiscated and the owner/student can pick up the phone after school in Student Services.
    • 2nd offense: Cell phone/device is confiscated and a parent must pick up the phone after school in the office.
    • 3rd offense: Cell phone/device is confiscated and a parent must pick up the phone after school and the student receives a day of ISS.
    • 4th offense and beyond: Cell phone/device is confiscated and further disciplinary action up to OSS may occur.
    • Failure or refusal to comply with the above guidelines will result in OSS

Cell Phone Policy

In accordance with new GCS policy, students may be exempt from taking the final exam for English 9 College Prep if the meet the following criteria: "A" average at the end of the semester, have four or fewer absences, for the semester or "B" average at the end of the semester, have three or fewer absences, for the semester. Excused and unexcused absences are not considered in determining exam exemption. The number of absences, regardless of the reason and the academic average, for the semester, are the qualifying factors for exam exemption. Students may still choose to take the exam to raise their overall grade in the class.

In addition, 3 tardies to class will equal 1 absence toward your exam exemption. Please be sure to be on time and prepared for class each day.

Exam Exemption Policy

You will place your cellphone in the holder at the front of the classroom in the slot that corresponds with the number on your assigned desk.

You CAN be exempt from the exam in this class! Be here everyday, and do the work you are assigned.
