SWBAT: Explain the cutaneous membrane layers

☆What are some of the ways the skin helps us keep our homeostatic balance?

"Years wrinkle the skin but a happy life can smooth the soul.” ~Doug MacArthur

☾Marieb Pg. 114 SAE 1-14

7 of 67

Integumentary Skintroduction

Epidermis the nonvascular outer protective layer of the skin composed of non-living cells

Dermis the living layer of the skin that produces the new cells

8 of 67

Integumentary Skintroduction

Hypodermis "Subcutaneous" (low skin) region rich in adipose (fat) that thermo-regulates skin

Melanocyte pigment producing cells that protects against sunlight by reflecting the light

9 of 67

Integumentary Skintroduction

Hair Follicle protective zone around active hair root cells

Hair Shaft collection of stacked deceased cells that grow beyond the skin line

10 of 67

Integumentary Skintroduction

Hair erector muscle that applies force to the hair follicle to make hair erect

Sebaceous Gland structures that secrete oil to lubricate the skin and trap pollutants

11 of 67

Integumentary Skintroduction

Pacinian corpuscle nerves that detect pressure, texture, and heat

Blood vessels tubes that exchange heat, nutrients, and wastes with skin cells

Sweat glands structure that secretes H2O to expel wastes as well as maintain moisture and temperature homeostasis

Membrane Diversity

Epithelial Tissue Membranes

    • Cutaneous a dry superficial semi-permeable membrane
    • Mucous moist deep membranes that produce mucus at body orifices
    • Serous moist deep membranes that reduce friction between organs

17 of 67

Membrane Diversity

Connective Tissue Membranes

    • Fluid producing membrane that connects, protects, and gives shape to joints and cavities
    • Synovial Fluid creates a viscous fluid capsule around a joint reducing friction between bones

External Defenses

Collagen

(hill producing)

a protein that provides flexibility it needs to stretch and return to its original state as your body moves

Keratin

(horned protein)

a protein that provides structure to the skin and fortifies it to withstand mechanical stress

24 of 67

External Defenses

Melanin

(dark protein)

protects the skin by absorbing ultraviolet rays. Production is affected by light exposure, race, and mutations.

25 of 67

Hair/fur modified skin cells that helps an organism regulate its temperature, block environmental toxins, and reflect ultraviolet light.

26 of 67

Integument modified skin cells that are tightly packed cells in plates block environmental toxins, reflect unwanted ultraviolet light , and can be used for fleeing or fighting.

SWBAT: Elaborate on cutaneous disorders

☆What does skin tell us about DNA?

"Thoughts leave deeper scars than almost anything else." ~ J.K. Rowling

Cutaneous Disorders

Cutaneous Disorders

I. Fibrosis forms as skin heals after an injury. The amount of scar tissue may be determined by...

  • Size
  • Depth
  • Location
  • Age

Formation scars are the result of fibroblast cells weaving collagen protein fibers together.

33 of 67

Cutaneous Disorders

Hypertrophic scars occur when the body overproduces collagen raised keloid (more melanin and keratin).

Atrophic scar takes the form of a sunken recess in the skin, which has a pitted appearance. (less melanin more keratin)

Stretch marks are caused when the skin is stretched rapidly tearing collagen.

Cutaneous Disorders

II. Causes Acne

  • Hormones: Adolescents are particularly prone to attacks because soon after puberty hormonal changes in the body increase the activity of the sebaceous glands.
  • Hereditary factors: Some families are particularly prone to acne attacks whilst others are not.
  • Diet: There are many myths about food and acne. There is no evidence that diet plays an essential part in causing pimples therefore avoiding chocolate, for example, will not prevent pimples

37 of 67

Cutaneous Disorders

Formation

  • When the amount of oil increases, it can combine with dead skin cells within the follicles to clog pores. This blockage, also called a plug, allows acne bacteria to thrive. (Webmd, 2018)
  • Plugs exposed to air appear as blackheads as the oils are oxidized
  • Whiteheads are closed plugs, underneath the skin. They are the more serious of the two as they can become inflamed.

I. Integumentary awareness...

  • Close your eyes and take ten deep breaths
  • Rotate your hand so your palm is up.
  • Place your right index finger in the center of middle finger
  • Slowly and lightly guide the finger from distal to proximal.
    • Reflect on the change in sensation as you progress.
    • How does the sensitive differ from the proximal to the distal?
    • Which areas were the most sensitive?
  • Rotate your arm so the palm is facing down.
    • Repeat the above

    • How many whorls are there?*
    • Does the pattern radiate from the center or ark?*
  • Examine the dorsal surface of your hand under the microscope
    • Describe the difference between clenched fist and open hand.

Cognitions!

  • Is every NBA player famous?
  • Will every student get A’s?
  • What do grades mean
    • represents outstanding distinction and excellence. 90-100%. These are not impossible to achieve but are rare and difficult to come by.
    • signifies levels of solid accomplishment and goodness. 80- 89%. Good is more common than excellent but more rare than average. While there is merit to hard work and long hours, it does not always guarantee success.
    • signifies "average- simple, common, adequate but ordinary 70-79%. Average is not usually an appealing rank to artists who strive for extraordinary and unique. C is however a very respectable point.
    • represents results less than standard and/or mediocre- just passable 60-69%. Perhaps priorities about school or life have not been established. Recognize however, that a D can also mean that you truly do not understand what is expected.
    • is a clear failure. < 59% It represents lack of effort/interest. It is a cause for deep concern.
  • Grades are not a measurement of intellect or potential!!!
